"Rick and Morty Season 6 Redux" Felt like a Season 5 Rehash

Image
I'm re-reading my review of Rick and Morty  and how in the world did I let that come through? I've been saying throughout my re-watch that I like what they've done with Jerry, but re-watching this episode, yeah Jerry's become better, but realistically the character I like the most was Beth, both Beth's actually. I think if I had to define this episode, I think I'd have to say that this season really feels like a season five rehash. I mean much of it is spent without portal travel, and there are some mixed results, but it really did feel forced, why couldn't Rick fix it exactly?     I mean I get that he's working on it, but surely the smartest man on Earth would remember how to create portal travel, or was it Rick Prime that invented the central finite curve, because he had a green portal too. I don't know, I mean it's good that they're trying new things, I think it's interesting for them to try their hand at the horror genre with ep

"Rick and Morty Season 5" Arguably it's Best

Image
Rick and Morty season five is where the grooves feel just that much better again. I mean just look at Rickmurai Jack , while it was preceded by one of the most random episodes involving two crows, it genuinely was one of my favourite episodes of Rick and Morty ever. I mean fans have been waiting years, for any sort of confirmation involving Evil Morty, and while not everything is confirmed yet, it's good to know that he did find a way to escape the crushing grip of Rick. I mean not everything about this episode is amazing, it is the incest baby season, and it's clear even the other Rick's never let this dimension live it down.     I mean Amortycan Grikfitti  isn't the best episode, but this season genuinely has consistently great episodes for you to enjoy. Are you saying you didn't enjoy Mr. Nimbus and his oddly flamboyant behaviour. He even mentions Diane for all you degenerates (me) interested in Rick's wife and who he was prior to become the jaded old m

"Rick and Morty Season 4" I Still Haven't Put a Title in?

Image
I'm going to be honest, this is the part of the show where Rick and Morty  started blending for me. It's not that it's bad, it's just that eventually you so many episodes of the show that some just pale in comparison to others. I mean this one has Jerry back, but at the same time it's also just like, he's still kind of annoying in this role. I mean he surprisingly becomes more respected as the seasons go on, and I kind of dig it, here everyone still mostly makes fun of him. And also it has Elon Tusk.     I mean it's not like anything's become noticeably worse, it's just that my two favourite episode out of this favourite season are the first and the last one. While I think Morty is a giant pussy for just using the crystal in the dumbest way possible, Rick going through multiple phoenix protocols was so funny to me. I guess I can be amused with funny yet dumb Hitler jokes. As for Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri , well it's pretty obvious wha

"Rick and Morty Season 3" Some of It's Best Material

Image
Let's get this straight, pretty much the only thing I disliked in this season was Jerry, and by a pretty good margin too. I have long maligned about how abhorrent I found the entire debacle the Jerry-Beth divorce was. I mean he's pathetic, but eventually you reach such pathetic levels that it becomes almost unbearable, and no one, not even their most ardent supporters, want to see them try and climb out of the whole again. You need little victories, and Jerry's divorce was just an opportunity for people to laugh at him at almost any instance, and it was hardly focused on either, so once they did end up getting back together, it didn't feel like much changed.     Otherwise though, this season is fantastic. I mean come on, I know people hate Pickle Rick , and for good reason too I think the people who like to yell Pickle Rick or think it's the funniest thing are annoying as well, but I do have to admit I thought the action sequences in that episode were fantasti

"Rick and Morty Season 2" Slowly Heating Up

Image
Once again re-watching Rick and Morty  has made me feel old again. I distinctly remember the beginning and the ending of both of these seasons. I'm a bit embarrassed to say it's how I discovered Hurt by Johnny Cash, but we can't all be perfect can we? Looking back, I think I'm in love with this season, I mean I'm not the craziest fan about Interdimensional Cable 2 or Big Trouble in Little Sanchez, but only two dud episodes in what is a fantastic season is pretty great. If I had to describe this season, I'd say it's better than the first one, and it's where the show starts finally coming into it's own.     Look, it doesn't really begin expanding or building on a bunch of lore that fans have come to love from the series, but what it does it really find it's voice. I mean I think they finally realized what they have in Summer, and while there is a lot of Rick and Morty, the show is finally realizing the potential they have in exploring oth

"Dominic Fike - Sunburn" Half-Baked

Image
If I had to describe Dominic Fike, I would say I only remember him being that character in Euphoria  that I hardly remember, and that he sang a song that went on way too long in the TV show. Other than that, I think he looks like Timo Cruz from Coach Carter, and I still think Timo Cruz is still cooler. Regardless, I do actually like two, maybe three songs from Fike, and considering how he's trying to make himself as this "accessible indie artist" I'd hope that would be the case. I thought Hey Blondie  from the Barbie movie soundtrack was actually a pretty cute track, I have a soft spot for that one, Babydoll is a genuinely catchy track from him though, and despite being so short that song's been stuck in my mind for longer than it should have. Oh, he was also in Photo ID  with Remi Wolf but frankly I don't think he added too much to the song. He also did that decent cover of Bags  by Clairo, but reaslitically all I remember Fike for is making short songs

"Drake - For All The Dogs" Warcrime

Image
Why am I reviewing this again? I had to go check the last time I liked a modern Drake song, and I'm pretty sure What's Next  was the only song I had liked from him. That was over two years ago. For a mainstream artist whose supposed to be accessible, but also from the same city as me, I have not been impressed by Drake. Look, I try and support Canadian artists but I can't support this man all I know him for these days is being fruity, texting minors, and showing up to Toronto Raptors games it's not exactly a stellar reputation. I mean I did really enjoy old Drake singles I remember hearing them as a kid they were good, but I don't really expect any of that now, so without further ado, a painful track-by-track review of For All The Dogs  who let this be almost 1 and half hours long? For All The Dogs - Drake Virginia Beach - 40/100 I'm afraid that the Frank Ocean sample is going to be the best part of this song. I mean you can barely tell it's Frank Ocea

"Rick and Morty Season 1" Rough Around the Edges, but Still Shiny

Image
I remember when I first started watching Rick and Morty . I mean I was in elementary school for god's sake, but I loved it. I mean it's hard to believe it's going on for seven seasons now. I mean, as seen form my reviews of Community  I love Dan Harmon's work, and I hold him in an incredibly high regard. So with season seven coming back, and clips of the show generally popping up into my feed, it felt right to go back all to where it started. In retrospect, it looks kind of funny, and almost bootlegish. There were a lot of staples of earlier Rick and Morty seasons that were just kind of ignored in later seasons, and frankly for good reason too. But before I get ahead of myself, let's discuss the good of this season.     I mean, in general it's just more grounded. Like Community  before it, if you want your show to go balls to the walls with the weird wacky high-concept idea's, you're going to need to establish the norm, and the characters breaking

"Community Season 6" I Thought it was Better

Image
I write this review a man left with a hole in his heart. Look, Community  wasn't perfect, but I would be lying to you if I said it wasn't what I needed at the moment. After a disturbingly quick rewatch the show, I am sad to report that the show has come to an end, and that the last season was not what I remembered it to be. One of my friends, who also holds this show dear to his heart, once remarked to me that season 1-3 is where the Community peaked, season 4 was the gas leak year, 5 was good, and 6 was once again bad. Personally, I thought season 6 was decent, but looking back, I finally understand why I thought that.     Look, it still has its bright moments, the Dean really shines in Lawnmower Maintenance & Postnatal care , but does anyone actually enjoy Laws Of Robotics & Party Rights . That might be in contention for one of my least favourite Community episodes. I thought the main story was weak, and the same could be said for the b-plot as well. The entire

"Community Season 5" Grasping for Greatness

Image
Is it wrong to say I actually enjoy the later season of Community  for the most part. I mean it doesn't really have the charm of the earlier seasons, and the fact that it looks more professional can be off-putting at times, but is it wrong to say that Harmon still has it? I mean it's not that anything's become particularly worse. I mean of course losing Troy is a major blow, one they pretty much spend the rest of the series trying to recover from, and Chang is still weird, but I kind of like Professor Buzz Hickey.     While it is weird they've been in college for so long, you cannot tell me that season 5 was bad. Basic Intergluteal Numismatics, Geothermal Escapism, Cooperative Polygraphy, App Development and Condiments, Advanced Advanced Dungeons and Dragons? I mean it's a pretty star studded season. It has all the same high concept episodes that made the show just so delectable fans, and it even tries to showcase some "underutilized" characters, such

"Community Season 4" Well They Tried

Image
Anyone who watches Community can see that season 4 is different. Known as the gas-leak year, the first episode pretty much confirms everything you really need to know. There's a lot of spectacle, but for not much reason. Jeff justifies pretty much every decision of his by just saying "new Jeff!" and some characters just show up on the screen for the sake of being on the screen, and nothing more. I mean that's not to say that all the episodes are garbage, but at the same time a lot of them are really bad, and I struggle to watch them.     For instance, can we talk about Chang, and his Changnesia? Like just watch Advanced Documentary of Filmmaking, it's genuinely one of the most awful episodes of Community I've ever seen, and frankly I just skipped through it mostly. Of course there's also the introduction of the darkest timeline once again, which by the way still makes little sense. I thought they put too much stock into it for the third season, and b

"The Rocky Horror Picture Show" Meets All the Qualifications of Being a Film

Image
I write this review, frankly confused on what it even is. All I have to say is that it is certainly a film. I mean don't get me wrong the film is fun, very fun I might even add, but it's genuinely some of the weirdest shit I've ever seen, and frankly, even in the age I live in, I'm astonished it managed to make it to the finish line in 1975. The usual cycle for me would be to dedicate a couple paragraphs to this piece of work, but I don't think I have that much to say. All I have to say is that the music's fairly catchy, but it drags on a decent amount in both the beginning and the end. I mean it's one of those things where you just have to see it to believe it, and I can understand why people are obsessed with it. The film of gay icons, this movie makes me question everything about the 70's. I don't even know what the message of this movie is, it's genuinely just really weird an i think it's for people to have a fun time. I'm a los

"Pitch Perfect 3" I Had More Fun Writing This Review

Image
Are you proud of me? I vanquished my greatest enemy yet, the Pitch Perfect trilogy. Why you might ask? Well, because my sister wanted to bond with me, and so she so wisely chose a trilogy full of singing, which I gladly accepted, thanks in large part to my love of musicals, even if I was never the biggest accapella fan. What ensued was the quite possible the greatest decline I have ever seen in human history. Look, I think Pitch Perfect 3  is better than Pitch Perfect 2  but that's pretty much the equivalent of saying that you didn't fail with a 10%, you failed with a 20%. Everyone still thinks you suck so how much has actually changed?     I'll give you a very quick rundown of what's changed. Everyone's together, and for a very thin reason, and they're all kind of depressed about their lives, but it's okay because they actually resolve this by having them somehow accept this for no good reason. Not to mention most of the plot points end up being resol

"Little Brother - The Minstrel Show" This Channel's Not for Me

Image
I know absolutely nothing about who Little Brother is, or what The Minstrel Show is about. I'd say something but it'd all be disingenuous so all I will say is that my friend Sweaty recommended this album and here is my track-by-track review of The Minstrel Show  by Little Brother The Minstrel Show - Little Brother Welcome to the Minstrel Show (feat. Yahzarah) - N/A Why would I rank a fake intro to an album pretending to be a fake TV network? It's pretty catchy though. Beautiful Morning - 70/100 I mean would I ever listen to this? Probably not to be honest, but this is a fun track where I can enjoy the beat and the lyrics while they're in front of me. The Becoming - 60/100 A nice cool track with Phonte explaining his rise. I like the swagger he delivers his lines in. Not Enough - 71/100 Probably the best hook out of the three songs so far in my opinion, not super catchy like it's a pop-rap song or anything, but still good enough. Cheatin' - 65/100 This song

"Community Season 3" Unstoppable

Image
This to me, is some of the best TV sitcoms have ever come close to producing. I'll admit it, this is truly peak TV for me, and no one can tell me otherwise. I mean it had it all. A cool badass teacher in Professor Kane, may he rest in peace, multi-part episodes where they lean as hard as possible into the concept they were hoping to achieve. Frankly, they even toned down how much of a villain Pierce is in this season, it doesn't have the grating swings its predecessor has, while being bigger and better.      Where do I even begin? Probably my least favourite episode in this season has to be Virtual Systems Analysis or Contemporary Impressionists. I mean they're fine, in other seasons they might be better, but what I think holds them back is that they're trying too hard to stick to the concept they thought about, but it doesn't quite stick the landing. Yes, while it's funny that Abed is in debt because he's hired so many impressionists, at the same time

"Community Season 2" The Pendulum Swings Farther

Image
Community season 2, is by all accounts better than it's predecessor, it's wackier, larger, and even better than before. Though, I have to admit, a small part of me kind of misses the stability from the first season. It's not that I prefer it, it's just that, the truth is the more freedom you're allowed, the larger your swings are, the more you're bound to miss. That's not to say that this season was full of a bunch of dud seasons that I thought were inconsistent, there's just a part of me that kind of misses when they did actual college stuff, in the show about college.     I suppose in a sense that's what this rewatch has left me, with a sense of realization that I sort of romanticized parts of this show, where all I remember are my favourite parts, and it's a 12 course meal that never stops delivering my favourite foods. I mean can anyone honestly say they really enjoyed Pierce or Chang that much in this season? I suppose part of it is my

"Community Season 1" Shaping Up into Form

Image
Look, I know what they say about Community. Dan Harmon is an asshole and he's really weird. Ok, valid. Chevy Chase is a terrible person and he was a cancer on set. Ok, also true. Season 2 and 3 are their best seasons. Also true, but still, there's value to be had in this yet to be realized beautiful cocoon of TV show that is the first season of Community. In fact, I'd argue it has some of the best idea's of the show, and no I don't mean just in terms of it's most iconic episodes.     What I mean is that, the issue that plague later seasons, which is weak character development in a lot of the characters doesn't exist yet. Take Pierce for example, while yes I know part of the reason he became the villain in later season was because of the way he treated everyone on set, but at the same time, he really was just better in the first one. I mean it's kind of fun when he's the villain, but eventually you do have to ask yourself "why do they keep

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" Comes With a Strong Set of Rose-Tinted Glasses

Image
I remember first reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower , and then watching the accompanying movie. It was about 10 years ago at that point, and tumblr still held relevancy, especially on Instagram where people would love posting about these sorts of things. To me they were all iconic, the scene where Sam goes through the tunnel, the living room routine between both Sam and Patrick, Patrick claiming he was the hottest in the room. Looking back, and finishing the movie, all I've come to realize is that the reason I liked it was because I was probably a bit like Charlie all along, in sort of a young naive way.     I mean if you write out the plot, you start to see how creepy and ridiculous it is. Weird, anti-social kid who's a freshman struggles to make friends, and then a bunch of seniors decide to pick him up, and take him under their wing. They end up dragging him along the entire way, and coerce him into many things, such as taking drugs, participating in what is very

"Only Murders in the Building Season 3" Losing Focus but the Picture's Still There

Image
I know I know, how in the world did they make 3 seasons of this show, wouldn't the believability just wear off eventually? I mean sort of, but I think that's ok, because part of what makes this show so fantastic isn't the murder itself, rather the intrigue that surrounds it. Let me explain, what I believe makes Only Murders  such a great TV show is not that you want to crack the big mystery before it happens, nor that you really feel as if it's gritty or dark, but it's like an onion, which as Shrek so eloquently put it, "it has layers". These layers are slowly peeled back episode by episode, and by the end you had so much fun that you hardly remember why you peeled all of them back, you just want to peel some more.     However, this season, I must admit something was off, and it started to lose focus. Somewhere along the process of peeling the onion the layers started to look a little off, like they never belonged there in the first place, and you st
