"Little Brother - The Minstrel Show" This Channel's Not for Me
I know absolutely nothing about who Little Brother is, or what The Minstrel Show is about. I'd say something but it'd all be disingenuous so all I will say is that my friend Sweaty recommended this album and here is my track-by-track review of The Minstrel Show by Little Brother
The Minstrel Show - Little Brother
Welcome to the Minstrel Show (feat. Yahzarah) - N/A Why would I rank a fake intro to an album pretending to be a fake TV network? It's pretty catchy though.
Beautiful Morning - 70/100 I mean would I ever listen to this? Probably not to be honest, but this is a fun track where I can enjoy the beat and the lyrics while they're in front of me.
The Becoming - 60/100 A nice cool track with Phonte explaining his rise. I like the swagger he delivers his lines in.
Not Enough - 71/100 Probably the best hook out of the three songs so far in my opinion, not super catchy like it's a pop-rap song or anything, but still good enough.
Cheatin' - 65/100 This song simply confirms my suspicions that is it not that hard to make a good R&B singing even if it sounds a bit generic. I think if the lyrics weren't so goofy I'd be able to actually enjoy it as a real song, but I cannot take the chorus seriously. Still a relatively entertaining song other than the Mr. Biggs impersonator or whatever.
Hiding Place - 55/100 The Elzhi feature is fine but the beat and chorus feels weaker to me and it feels kind of long in my eyes.
Slow It Down - 80/100 I'm kind of enjoying this beat it's kind of fun, I like it it's groovy, I almost want to get up and dance to it. Not sure how I feel about the hook, it could definitely be stronger, but it's serviceable enough and it keeps the songs vibe going.
Say It Again - 78/100 Now this is what I was looking for, some good sampling to help me enjoy these songs. I feel like it's a bit too punchy but it still hits. Never mind I heard this hook and I'm slightly more down on it. Why can't they just get a real singer to sing a catchy hook, surely it can't be that hard to do that?
5th and Fashion - N/A It's just a skit, that is all. It's pretty fun while it lasts though, why didn't they use this on a real song?
Lovin' It (feat. Joe Scudda) - 77/100 This second half of the album is ramping up they finally figured out the way to my heart, some great samples. The refrain isn't too half bad either.
Diary of a Mad Black Daddy - N/A Another skit. Poor kid someone get him a math tutour.
All for You (feat. Darien Brockington) - 60/100 I don't know if it's because I took some time before doing the second half of this album, but I feel like it started off fine but it's really ramped up to being relatively consistent in this second half.
Watch Me - 45/100 Sadly this song had me bored. I suppose I spoke too soon about the second half of this album.
Sincerely Yours - 40/100 I'm sure this song is interesting to people who enjoy rap music, but sadly that isn't me. I simply live for rap that has poppier elements, or in general just goes a little bit harder than whatever this is.
Still Lives Through - 40/100 Busta Rhymes saying Oh My God a bunch is quite grating they sadly are not ending this album on a good note I miss that run of songs in the middle I enjoyed.
Minstrel Show Closing Theme (Feat. Yahzarah) - N/A The part where Yahzarah sings is the best part out of the last four songs. that is all I'll say.
We Got Now (feat. Chaundon) - 50/100
Final Score: 60/100
I'd say I'm sorry but I'm really not, I went to go listen to some more hyperpop after this. I'm sure to someone this sounds good, and I'll admit, the idea of being a TV network while actually being an album is cool and all, it's just that I'm not that interested in what the TV's showing off to me. I mean some of the songs were cool and decent, but it'd never be something I actually put on to listen to, it's just something I'd be fine with if someone put it on in a car. I mean you shouldn't be coming to me for rap opinions, because I find that I'm very picky with which artists I'll actually listen to and enjoy.
