"Community Season 4" Well They Tried
Anyone who watches Community can see that season 4 is different. Known as the gas-leak year, the first episode pretty much confirms everything you really need to know. There's a lot of spectacle, but for not much reason. Jeff justifies pretty much every decision of his by just saying "new Jeff!" and some characters just show up on the screen for the sake of being on the screen, and nothing more. I mean that's not to say that all the episodes are garbage, but at the same time a lot of them are really bad, and I struggle to watch them.
For instance, can we talk about Chang, and his Changnesia? Like just watch Advanced Documentary of Filmmaking, it's genuinely one of the most awful episodes of Community I've ever seen, and frankly I just skipped through it mostly. Of course there's also the introduction of the darkest timeline once again, which by the way still makes little sense. I thought they put too much stock into it for the third season, and bringing it back as a copout for the fourth one was even worse.
I mean by far my least favourite aspect of the show was the whole thing around Jeff's father. I understand trying to finally resolve that plot point, but at the same time it was so stupid watching Britta talk about how she finally helped with some victories. I mean it was genuinely embarrassing watching her violate his privacy and be there at his dads place just for the sake of being some comedic relief. There are ways for Britta to get some small wins, but this is now how it should be going.
Also can we talk about Pierce, or the lack of it. Look, I disliked how they treated him in season 2, but I thought they did a decent job in season 3 returning him to the role of bigoted man who sometimes managed to provide some wisdom. That's why I was a little disappointed when he returned to little more than some old dude who's technically part of the study group but pretty much never actually shows up or has any sort of real role because everyone just hates him.
Final Score: 60/100
Frankly, the only reason I endured this at all was because of the love I held for the show previously. Now, looking back this really is a season you can mostly skip. There are some good episodes, and some episodes that remind you of Dan Harmons writing style. But much of the time when watching this season it just feels like it's going through the motions, and things are just happening for the sake of the gimmick, or because it it feels like something Community would do to feel "meta".
