"Joyce Manor - I Used To Go To This Bar" Surprisingly Decent

Image
I write this review as a pretty big fan of Joyce Manor. I wouldn't call myself their biggest fan, I know people who have tattoo's because of them, but I've listened to every one of their albums, I've seen them live, and I even like albums from them that many consider mediocre or not worth their time. All of this to say I was pretty skeptical of this album coming into it. I mean their last record, 40 oz. to Fresno was underwhelming on all fronts in my eyes. Not just in the sense that it was their shortest album (which is hilarious considering this band seems allergic to songs over 2 minutes and albums longer than 20 minutes). But it just wasn't as good. I liked a couple of tracks off of it, but we waited all that time and the best track off of it was a 1 minute song that they had basically repurposed. And so, in the leadup to this latest album I had more than my own healthy share of skepticism. I only liked about half of the singles, and the singles I didn...

"The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers" An Improvement on all Fronts

Image
Chills man. Some parts of this film give me chills. Like before, this will be a bit of movie and book review, compare and contrasting the two, because Peter Jackson's adaptation of this series has become so iconic, that I could not imagine one without the other. And I have to say, I do think The Two Towers is pretty handily better. Perhaps it's just because I love the large sweeping epic fights, either way, I think the second book of the saga is a tremendous improvement. For a movie over 20 years old now, I think it still holds up incredibly well, and I would recommend anyone, especially those who are a fan of fantasy to give this movie and this book the respect it deserves. It is truly a classic for a reason, and it is very much well worth the three hour runtime the movie has. So let's talk about it.     I was looking through my first review of the film/book and honestly I might have to go back on it. I think Peter Jackson might have done too much mucking...

"Saba, No ID - From the Private Collection of Saba and No I.D." Bleh

Image
You'll probably be able to guess what score I'm going to give this album. I can probably guess it already, but who knows, there's always a chance that an album comes along to buck the trend and really reel me into a genre. I'm not saying it'll be this album, but when my friend Slayer recommended it I gave the most popular track, head.rap , a shot and I didn't hate it, I almost enjoyed it. So without further ado, my track-by-track review. From the Private Collection of Saba and No I.D.- Saba, No ID Every Painting Has a Price (feat. BJ The Chicago Kid and Eryn Allen Kane) - 60/100 A pretty easygoing and nice track. It doesn't really wow me but it kept my attention the entire time so it did it's job. Breakdown - 45/100 I wouldn't go as far to say that this song is not interesting or anything, it sounds well produced and I can appreciate that but the rapping is pretty uninteresting to me. Crash (feat. Raphael Saadiq and Kelly Rowland) - 45/100 You ...

"Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced" Sadly Boring

Image
Normally, I like to write the blurbs for these albums prior to listening to them, but this time I decided not to. Partially because I forgot to, and partially because I don't have much to say. Of course, I have some knowledge of music that came before me, and as someone who enjoys rock music of course I've heard of Jimi Hendrix before. The only issue is, a part of me kind of wishes I never actually listened to this album. Before listening to this album the only song I knew by Hendrix was Angel , which I did find out because Zayn did a bad cover of. Sadly, I have to report that I did not particularly enjoy this album, I just don't get it. Or at least that's what I'd like to think because apparently a lot of people get much enjoyment or value from it. Perhaps I'm simply too young to enjoy it, or my I just can't understand it. So without further ado, my track-by-track review. Are You Experienced - Jimi Hendrix Foxy Lady - 60/100 I feel like songs were mor...

"Control: Ultimate Edition" Great Lore, Good Enough Gameplay

Image
I'll admit, this game took a bit to really get going, and it took me longer to complete than I thought. But in terms of just relatively small, really contained games story games I must admit Control is pretty high up there. And the best part is? It's hardly even about the gameplay, it's about what most people usually consider the window dressing. The lore behind Control  is just really cool. The best part about this game is learning about the Federal Bureau of Control, all that they do, and all of the items/things they are constantly doing behind the scenes to keep the world running. Let's talk about it.     Let's get it right out of the way, I think combat might be one of the weaker elements of the game, but that's one of the only complaints I have about this game. I do think the service weapon is a cool concept. The only issue? It's only a single gun, and despite being your "main weapon" of choice, it's pretty much useless. That's n...

"New Girl Season 1" Fine Enough

Image
I'll admit, I'm a little surprised I stuck it out with this show for about a season. I wouldn't say it's particularly cringe, like with  Parks and Recreation, which I struggled to finish the first season for (and got about six episodes into season two for), but it didn't immediately endear me to the cast the way a sitcom like How I Met Your Mother  or Community  did. It was just, alright? I needed something to watch before I went to bed every day, and frankly even if it took me multiple attempts it did at the very least seem like the most inoffensive option to actually keep my attention. Let's talk about it.     I will make it very clear, the reason I'm so lukewarm at New Girl  at the moment is that I struggle to appreciate like half of the main cast. I like Schmidt to be sure, even if he is a douche he is the cast member that always finds himself in the most ridiculous hijinks, which I can appreciate, but other than that I'm mostly fin...

"The Shawshank Redemption" Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying

Image
Look, sometimes you'll hear about films from before your time, films that are so highly rated but when you put them on and actually watch them you're just left wanting more. You're sitting there confused wondering if you were simply born too late to appreciate the movie and where it came from, but when it comes to The Shawshank   Redemption , I truly believe this film deserves all of the hype it gets, and more. I think I can say pretty safely this is one of my favourite films of all times. It just hits all of the right notes, it doesn't need to be so intense you're offput by watching it later, dare I say it's perfect? Let's talk about it.     Where do I even start? Maybe with the plot. I think in my mind I would describe this film as feel-good, not in the sense that it's like most other easy-going feel-good films. I mean it's longer than most films in this category, and that's because it's not just smooth sailing the entire way, but that...
