"New Girl Season 1" Fine Enough

I'll admit, I'm a little surprised I stuck it out with this show for about a season. I wouldn't say it's particularly cringe, like with Parks and Recreation, which I struggled to finish the first season for (and got about six episodes into season two for), but it didn't immediately endear me to the cast the way a sitcom like How I Met Your Mother or Community did. It was just, alright? I needed something to watch before I went to bed every day, and frankly even if it took me multiple attempts it did at the very least seem like the most inoffensive option to actually keep my attention. Let's talk about it.

I will make it very clear, the reason I'm so lukewarm at New Girl at the moment is that I struggle to appreciate like half of the main cast. I like Schmidt to be sure, even if he is a douche he is the cast member that always finds himself in the most ridiculous hijinks, which I can appreciate, but other than that I'm mostly fine, or a little ew with the rest of the cast members. I mean Jess is just annoying. I'm sorry but I literally cannot even remember her in any of her other roles anymore. I vaguely remember her being nonchalant in 500 Days of Summer, but now all I can think about is her singing way too much. I don't even get it, she isn't a good singer it's just annoying singing. I mean just listen to the intro track it's almost grating frankly, which makes it a miracle I still enjoyed this show enough to continue on with it.

And what about Nick? A friend thought that I might like Nick, but the more I see him on screen the more eh I am about him. He's mostly just very self-loathing, which I suppose I can relate to, but honestly he doesn't do that much this season other than hop around random women and make bad life decisions. I mean it's so hilariously obvious that he likes Jess, and that the endgame is going to be Nick and Jess together. I mean you could have seen it coming from like a mile away, yet for the finale of this season they randomly decided to have him go back to his ex very unexpectedly, and then just walk away in an ending that feels pretty unsatisfying.

In terms of Winston I just don't think he gets enough shine in the show for me to have a very strong opinion on him. I mean like I kind of miss Coach because he yelled more which is funny, but Winston only does three things this season. Babysit for a while, get a job with a weird sports personality boss, and yeah he has a girlfriend. I mean he literally does nothing in the finale and they joke about how he's pretty much hitting his stride at that time. I don't know it's just kind of frustrating that it feels like they spend way too much time on Jess even though everyone could see from a mile away both her relationships in season one were never going to work. Also who dates their child's teacher? Isn't that unethical?

Final Score: 60/100

Notice how I never mentioned Schmidt and Cece's relationship? That's because I think it's kind of cute. I mean he became significantly less douchey as soon as they started dating, and they don't do much other than have sex but they were slowly getting better. Of course that train was moving too quickly so they had to dash that again for the start of season two, which leaves viewers about exactly where season one started to be honest. Except for Winston he's just chilling. Good for him I suppose.
