"The Boondocks Season 2" Still Just as Funny
I'm back with a new season of The Boondocks, and a new site to (not) legally stream it form. I was pleasantly surprised with this season. This season basically took my biggest complaint with the last season, and flipped it on it's head, turning it into one of it's strengths? After watching the first season of Futurama to this, I must say I do appreciate a show with a decent bit more edge to it. I don't know if I'd go so far to say I enjoyed this more than season one, but I will say it was more balanced, and I did really laugh at one episode, so maybe I did. It feels like the showrunners did a better job balancing all the different personalities this time. Let's talk about it.
I distinctly remember my biggest complaint from season one was that I liked the Huey storylines the best by far, other than maybe Riley Wuz Here, which was very heartwarming. I just felt like the Grandpa Freeman and Riley centric episodes were just weaker, I wanted to see more Huey. Well I got the opposite of that, yet it worked. I don't know if it was actually real, but it did feel like Huey took a significant step back this season. From someone who I pictured being the main protagonist of the show, to being one of the three main characters in the Freeman family that define The Boondocks. And it worked?
I mean I kind of wish he had more screentime still, like in the The Story of Gangstalicious Part 2, he basically just shows up to tell Riley he's gay so he can have his own room which is pretty funny. At the same time I can't fault them. I really loved The Story of Gangstalicious Part 2. The show did a very good job at making both Riley and Grandpa Freeman much funnier, still keeping the show compelling even after pivoting away from what I felt was it's bright spot. Like what about Ballin, or Attack of the Killer Kung-Fu Wolf Bitch. I guess when you're designed to be this super-leftist voice of reason it can be difficult to make too many stories with you, and it's much easier to do satire with the other characters.
That's not to say they improved every other character. I was still a bit wishy washy on Uncle Ruckus I'm afraid. It's funny that he does so many odd jobs, but when it was a Ruckus centered episode like the finale, I wasn't laughing as much as I'd hope to. I just think his whole gimmick is a bit tired at this point, it's the same thing still. I also wasn't the biggest Rollo Goodlove fan, but I did really love Lethal Interjection. From all the songs they did, to their storylines, I can say with confidence I did enjoy lethal interjection significantly more than I did Gangstalicious.
Final Score: 80/100
I already started watching the third season and I have no regrets. Dick Riding Obama is a hilarious track. I hear that the final season is quite poor though so I'm a bit concerned by that. I hope it isn't that bad because frankly I'm read to steamroll through the rest of the show before I try anything else again. I wonder if this season will have more Huey. Also can we have more A Pimp Named Slick Back. I'm not too sure how to feel about Tom and Sarah at the moment as well, I think Jazmine is more interesting it's nice to have the kids actually interact with other kids.
