"Creature Commando's" Surprisingly Good for Seven Episodes
Honestly, this show was very much a tale of two halves for me. If you had asked me my opinion on this show after about two or three episodes, I would have been lukewarm on it. The plot felt pretty formulaic, and the only time I really managed to care about this show was when "The Bride" was on screen. Now, don't worry. There won't be any complaints about "woke" or how they ruined Frankenstein as a DC character, because frankly I didn't care too much about him or his role. But his appearance did mark by far the best part of this show, and that was shift away from your standard "team of misfits' show towards something that felt more real.
Now, don't get me wrong, this season is only seven episodes long you won't be blown away by intricate stories of how actually they're all the good guys, but what it does make you do is care about the characters, which is really hard with a show of this length. I mean seriously, whenever I see a "miniseries" or show like this I typically groan because it suffers from modern TV syndrome, where it's all plot for all seven episodes, and I just tend to care less overall about it. But this show manages to fit it in even with it's length. That doesn't mean I really like the beginning of it, but once this show veers into its first twist, it never really stops.
In fact, I'd argue that pretty much every member of the team has a good character-origin centric episode, well almost all of them. While I actually really do like Nina's story, I think my main gripe with her character is that hers is introduced last, and she does absolutely nothing in the story. She serves to be this sort of moral grounding compass, and is suggested as possibly being useful to keeping the team together. The only issue is she's entirely dead weight, never really fights anyone, and also fails at the one thing she's tasked as doing. She's basically fodder to remind the other characters of their humanity. Like why did Waller pick her in the first place? I think perhaps if they introduced her origin earlier, and had her actually do things I would have appreciated it more, because like I said, the backstories are good, I enjoyed her character.
Even when it came to characters like Weasel, GI Robot or Doc Phosphorus (especially Doc Phosphorus to be honest), my enjoyment of them skyrocketed through the roof, and I didn't even mind that the story technically slowed to a halt in the second half, as it slowly went through all of the members of the team. Really, my only complaint is that, no one ever actually talks about their backstories to the other members. To viewers it might feel like this one giant impactful moment, but the reality is everyone had their own moments of vulnerability alone, so it's sort of just like how much did each character really change or progress.
Final Score: 75/100
Even still, I think it does enough to make me excited about a season two. My only critique is that the Princess and her weird old man fetish for Flag kind of felt a bit like a "writers inserting their fetish thing" by James Gunn to be honest. I don't know how many princesses are fiending for "old men with experience," but hey what do I know. Moreover, while I praise this shows use of its limited runtime, I do think it could have benefitted from being longer. Like this season felt less like a season and more like an introductory miniseries. I mean it's just that short in my opinion. Good job James Gunn, it wasn't the greatest thing I ever watched, but you made me care enough to continue checking your stuff out.
