"A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" I'm Back In

Well what would you know. I called the last season of House of the Dragon painfully boring, and frankly I was a bit skeptical of any new ASOIAF content because of it. But as this show came out, i started to see more and more posts about this show. Surely it can't be this good I thought to myself. After all, I had just assumed HBO had completely burned the bridge with George R.R. Martin. But I was wrong. This show is really just that good. I mean I was waiting for the entire season to be over to watch it, but I just couldn't take it anymore. I kept on seeing these clips of Egg being just absolutely adorable, and frankly I've always been a sucker for this hero and his sidekick stories. So let's talk about it.

Some might complain that this show is too short, being that it's six episodes that run about 30 minutes a piece. And to that I say I think it kind of works for this show. The entire point of the Dunk and Egg novella's is that they're just a collection of random short stories watching the bond between these two grow. It doesn't need to be some big think piece or have some large overarching story. I mean perhaps in later seasons because the showrunners seem quite interested in covering Aegon's reign, but I think for now the format works with what the story is going for.

To be honest I was quite surprised this entire season took place during the tourney in Ashford. Of course it's been quite a while since I've read the novella's, but the way people talked about it I really thought this season was going to hit the ground running, and that I'd immediately get Dunk and Egg just on the road, interacting with smallfolk across the seven kingdoms. I don't think I mind though, because one thing this season did really well was create characters that felt well-worn even in the limited amount of screentime they got. Whether it be Raymun Fossoway, or Lyonel Baratheon, or Baelor Targaryen. These were characters I hardly thought about twice when reading the novella's, but now watching the show I feel significantly more endeared towards them.

Of course, none of this would matter if Ser Duncan and Aegon weren't so likable. I have no idea how old Egg is supposed to be during this short story but he's legitimately so adorable with his small, skinny stature and high-pitched voice. And while Ser Duncan is simple, and what he stands for is simple, there's something to be said about doing simple right. It's just a bit heartwarming watching a man stand up for what's right instead of letting things get all muddied up and grey.

Final Score: 80/100

As a bit of an ASOIAF superfan, I have to admit this show reeled me back in. If they ever do a show about Robert's Rebellion I think I'll be watching to be honest. They just need to remember to age them up because respectfully no one wants to watch fifteen year olds go out there and fight some wars. I really did doubt this show but eventually I just couldn't deny it any longer. George R. R. Martin still has it in him, even if I doubt he'll ever release The Winds of Winter at this point. Like seriously that series is never going to be finished and it'll be the death of me. Oh well at least I get to enjoy some quality TV.
