"Baby Driver" A Solid Crowd Pleaser
Apparently this is my friend's GF's favourite movie, which frankly I was surprised when I heard that sentence. I mean I've watched this film before watching it again today. It was pretty solid, but I don't know if I could hardly classify it as even close to my favourite movie. And my rewatch mostly solidified that for me. To me, this movie could best be classified as a crowd pleaser full of sweet tunes and actions scenes to satisfy just about anyone, and that's okay. I mean I won't go into how problematic the cast of this movie supposedly is because the only one I really knew was Kevin Spacey, but even still this movie was pretty solid. Let's talk about it.
Probably the best part of this film, and what you'll notice about this film is the editing and pacing. You have to give props where props is due and Edgar Wright deserves all of it. You can tell he has a very clear vision on how he wants all of the scenes to play out, and the music and the actions all line up with it very clearly. I think if the movie didn't feel as sharp or as snappy as it does with the editing and pacing, it would have all fallen apart. I mean what else would it fall back to? The dialogue? It's fine if not a little uninspiring, and frankly a little hard to believe.
Though, in this movie I suppose it should be over the top. I mean it's a love story about a getaway driver obsessed with movie trying to get away from the life of crime he's in. And if you told me the concept of this entire film was based around the lines of "facing the music" or "running away from the music" I'd probably believe you to be honest. Though, none of it really matters, because there isn't that much dialogue, and the film understands what you want to see, realism be damned. It knows everyone wants to see these sleek and highly skilled car chase scenes, with as many nice cars as they can reasonably jam in, mixed in with some decent tension and action. I mean even the scene where Baby is driving away is pretty good too.
I suppose that's probably the movies greatest flaw? Don't get me wrong it's good, but I don't think I'd say it's spectacular at any thing in my eyes. Like it's very easy to follow, and the plot is simple with the message being that eventually you have to pay for what you've done. But other than that I don't feel particularly strongly about any of the characters. On one hand, one might say it's a bit concerning that I talked so much about the editing/music choice in the film, but on the other hand it's a really good sign that I did, because I think it's that good. You can tell Edgar Wright's fingerprints are all over this film, and is what makes it works.
Final Score: 75/100
You know I usually use the ending of this film to just talk about something random about the film that doesn't really constitute criticism or critique but I was disturbed to find out that basically the entire cast of this movie is full of controversy. Does it really affect how much I enjoy this film? Not really. I don't think they were controversial when this film came out. It's not exactly like you can do much about that anyways, it's not like I'm wearing a shirt that says I love being cancelled or whatever. Either way if you're with a group of people and need to play a movie you could do a lot worse than this one.
