"Panic! At the Disco - Death of a Bachelor" Pretty Solid Pop
I have a bit of an odd relationship with this album to be honest. Because on one hand it's one my least favourite Panic! albums, but also that's just because I kind of really loved their first couple of albums as a child. This is actually the Panic! album I came into as a fan, as sadly I only became a fan at the tail end of what was left of this "band." Even still, I'd be lying if I said I didn't still listen to songs from this album to this day. After all, and I cannot stress this enough, Panic! At the Disco was my gateway band to listening to music in any semi-serious capacity. So of course, as it is somehow still sunny in Toronto, I jumped at the opportunity to review it again. So without further ado, my track-by-track review.
Death of a Bachelor - Panic! At the Disco
Victorious - 10/100 I am proud to say I never liked this song as a child. I mean it's so obnoxious. Whether its Brendon gloating his vocal chops like a peacock, or the chorus, this song is vile.
Don't Threaten Me with a Good Time - 60/100 All I will say is that champagne, cocaine, gasoline sounded like the coolest thing to me as a child. I also used to think the bridge to this song was the most clever thing ever. Make of that what you will.
Hallelujah - 75/100 I think in this instance the non-offensive lyrics work in favour of this song. like it's not a terrible tune at the heart of it, and dare I say I kind of enjoy it?
Emperor's New Clothes - 25/100 I also used to think this song was the coolest thing ever, make of that what you will. I've kind of listened to some cringe beforehand earlier in the day to give this album a fighting chance but I cannot defend my past love of this song.
Death of a Bachelor - 80/100 Finally, a non cringe song from this album that hasn't made me deeply reconsider my past.
Crazy = Genius - 75/100 This used to be one of my favourites from this album, and it's kind of still hitting like it used to.
LA Devotee - 80/100 It's catchy, inoffensive (which is hard to say for this album), and frankly it's good. I can see how it might get annoying if it's overplayed but uhhh I don't care I like it.
Golden Days - 85/100 I think if you removed some of the typical Brendanism's this song could eb so much better, but I'd be lying if I said it isn't still so good to this day.
The Good, the Bad and the Dirty - 15/100 This score is so generous you couldn't even convince my 14 year old self this was good.
House of Memories - 75/100 You know I always thought this song was good, but I never pegged it to have star potential, so I won't try and claim I saw it coming. It is pretty surreal to hear kids unironically sing this song these days though.
Impossible Year - 80/100 Kind of hard to mess up a slow song in my opinion, usually it's just hard to make it stand out. This song is good though.
Final Score: 70/100
To be honest I was very surprised to find out this album wasn't like a sub 40's album but actually rated decently. I guess I just thought Victorious would tank it's rating completely, I mean that song stinks. Anyways, this is by far from my favourite Panic! album, which is probably kind of concerning for anyone else who might find out about how I feel about the rest of this bands discography. Either way it was kind of fun relistening to this though. Nostalgia be damned I know the lyrics to most songs on this album, for better or for worse.
