"The Summer I Turned Pretty 2" They Need to Go Back to Having this Show in the Summer
If you were wondering, yes I did still watch this slop show, and no I did not enjoy it as much as I did last time. Of course, yes part of it is because this show lays it on so thick, and yes another part of it is that I'm team Conrad. But also, there were just some really bizarre choices this season that just made everything not feel that believable, and I'm just disappointed with the direction things seem to be going in. I definitely think this is a stepdown from season 1, and honestly I think the show's starting to forget a little bit about what it's supposed to be. So, let's talk about it.
So, many flashbacks. This show is called The Summer I Turned Pretty. Part of it's appeal is that it leans into the summer aesthetic and vibe to create a bright, fun, mostly lighthearted show. Except that's nowhere to be found this season. Respectfully, I can see how the death of Susanna would be an interesting point of conflict in this show, except it's cast a cloud so dark that this show seems more interested in flashbacks then playing out what actually happens. Instead of being a show that took place in the span of two months, it magically became one that happened in like a week at best? And if we're being real, the acting of this cast is not good enough to create a very convincing emotional drama, I mean they feel so stiff, or like they love holding the same faces. Though frankly, I don't think the story is doing them any favours either.
Can we talk about what they've done with the characters too? When was Steven smart? Smart enough to go to an Ivy League school? Nothing about his personality lines up with it, like at all. Not to mention they got rid of my GOAT Shayla. It just feels wrong watching Steven and Taylor go at it with each other. I mean it was the most obvious relationship simmering I've ever seen. I saw someone jokingly say the author is in love with Wasian couples, and considering what I've seen from the To All the Boys I've Loved Before series, I may dare say I agree. Not to mention Belly, who has become so unlikeable. I get that grief is affecting them all, but it's so hard to grief shame someone, or outgrief someone, when you're grieving over their own mom. Like be so for real right now. Like what wake up call does she get for basically using it as an excuse? A slap in the face from her mom? She yells at Conrad so much, when I think he deserves a pass infinitely more than she does.
Speaking of which, this romance is becoming too lopsided for the show to stay interested. Last season had a good amount of Conrad and Jeremiah content to keep both sides fed, but this season felt so Jeremiah centric, especially when almost all of the Conrad content was in the past. Like I get she ended up with Conrad last season, but this season just felt like a buildup to a Jeremiah season, instead of a real war. I mean he was literally wistfully fixing the house while they somehow managed to smile their way to a happy volleyball camp. Like seriously? Which brings me to another issue, any real family would have never let this Belly nonsense drag on for so long. Either they make her decided now and then, or it wouldn't have caused such a large rift. It's amazing that people pretend like she hasn't easily been the biggest strain in the two brothers' relationship, it's baffling.
Final Score: 45/100
Maybe I enjoyed watching this less because my sister wasn't here for me to yell at her with. I also just think the music choice is getting worse. Also on a side note this show could just be called "Absentee Fathers" and it wouldn't be wrong. Like it's hilarious how like every father/male in this show is a terrible person outside of Steven, Conrad and Jeremiah (I guess Cameron still exists). Like some father must have really hurt the author. Especially because the relationship between Susannah and Laurel is so weird, like I'm getting such strong lesbian couple vibes from them. Also, what's the point of reintroducing Cleveland? He has one scene this season, and doesn't even show up for the end, and nothing happens. Lastly, why is Cameron back? Just to give Skye a love interest. I'm unconvinced Skye even shows up for the next season. Not to mention the whole Aunt Julia being evil storyline felt so forced. Like Skye's existence was basically to try and shoehorn a "errr both sides" into an argument that didn't really need it. Let evil people be evil. Anyways I care about this show more than I should I hate you all.
