"Rick and Morty Season 8" Some Glimpses of the Old

Another year has come and gone, and that means another season of Rick and Morty has come and past. Yes, I would say it feels like this show is past it's prime, but come on, I've been watching since I was like 12 would I really ever stop watching this show? I mean how do you even top what they finished up last season in Rick Prime and Evil Morty mostly having their storylines tied up? Surprisingly, some good character focused-episodes that I didn't really mind.

A complaint I saw this season was that despite being half of the title of this show there wasn't that much Morty, and honestly, the complaints are right. But what if, I just don't care. The reason for this is simple, Morty is never allowed to age, and it's just really difficult to do too much and tinker with his character without ruining the dynamics in his family. Rick's name being first in the show really feels important, because this season it felt like the showrunners put a much bigger emphasis on Rick and the rest of the Smith family, and it just kind of worked.

I mean look at my favourite episodes this season, The Rick, The Mort & The Ugly, The Curicksous Case of Bethjamin Button, Nomortland and Hot Rick. most of them are just not Morty-centric episodes. Perhaps the showrunners need to be willing to do more, after all he can't just get mind-blown anytime his new growth might rock the boat too much. The showrunners are simply more interested in other dynamics between the Smith family, and honestly, I might too. I mean why not? I very much enjoy the Beth episodes, I loved the Jerry-only episode, and I generally enjoy hearing/learning about Rick's backstory. So I'm not saying that we need to forget about Morty, maybe the showrunners just need to start experimenting with him and the rest of the family.

That doesn't mean I won't enjoy the one off episodes. I thought this season did a decent job of at the very least trying to emulate some of the charm of them. I just also really do enjoy the more serialized episodes where the show establishes more lore. I understand the hesitancy to fully lean into it, this sitcom is supposed to be a sci-fi comedy first and foremost, and frankly I see fans arguing about canon and consistency all the time so I don't blame the writers for not wanting to muddy it up anymore.

Final Score: 75/100

I don't really have much to say about this show anymore. I'd say it's definitely plateaued in terms of quality, I just don't see it really jumping too high or low from this point on. I mean the quality could get worse, but I find it hard to see this show magically becoming gold for 10 episodes anymore. I see some people complain about the animation but to be honest it was never the highlight of this show anyways so I don't really care. Also on a side note I didn't even know there were three spinoffs to this show already? Who the hell ordered a show about the ripoff avengers and the president in this universe? Seriously? Who?
