"Iowa - Slipknot" Lyrics Matter

This album was a bit of a slog to get through, I won’t lie, but I suppose I was never really the target audience, and frankly metal was never my favourite genre even if I do like some of the songs that are provided. When my friend CJ had recommended Iowa by Slipknot I was a little intrigued. Frankly, my only other experience with them was this high school friend turned weirdly transphobic who listened to a lot of metal, but he also had these weird notions about masculinity and listened to Greta Van Fleet, so make of that what you will. I suppose I came out pleasantly surprised at least sonically, though I would say I’m less than impressed with the lyrics. So without further ado, my track-by-track scores.

Iowa
by Slipknot

(515) – N/A I was never a metal fan and after hearing some screams on this first track I’m not quite sure how this is going to go

People = Shit – 65/100 Like with my review of the Dillinger Escape Plan I will once again say I’m not the biggest fan of more spammy pieces of metal and typically prefer something more melodic. Song goes hard despite it all though, while I do think some of the lyrics are pretty corny once you get past the spammy intro the verses and choruses are pretty good.

Disasterpiece – 35/100 Frankly, I’m surprised the reviews to this album are as high as they are what the hell is the line “I wanna slit your throat and fuck the wound”, is he a big gore fan? I’m sorry but I can’t stop laughing at it I cannot take the rest of this song seriously.

My Plague – 60/100 Thank god the lyrics aren’t as bad in this album. I kind of dig the chorus?

Everything Ends – 50/100 “everything I see reminds me of her” that is all that needs to be said about this song, I can’t take that line seriously. Chorus kind of bangs once again though

The Heretic Anthem – 65/100 I wish I didn’t understand English so that this song was more enjoyable. It does indeed go hard the instrumentals are carrying on this album so hard. I beg you to go look at the genius page for this song and read the quote about the supposed inspiration for it and tell me you can take this band seriously.

Gently – 70/100 No cringy lyrics, less singing from Corey in general, what’s not to like from this song, other than the fact that I don’t think it goes as hard as other songs that might have some cringier lines.

Left Behind – 70/100 Finally some regular standard edgy lyrics that go along with some good instrumentals, there might be some hope for this album yet. Also on a side note but this band should really just stick to music and like nothing else. From the inspiration for the music, to the lyrics and the music videos it’s just so hilariously corny how does anyone take this band seriously.

The Shape – 55/100 I mean It’s alright. No super cringy lyrics and it’s not like its grating for my ears or something, just doesn’t really catch my ear in the same way that the other songs do.

I Am Hated – 30/100 I can’t tell if I find the rapping cringy or decent, actually after listening to the chorus the lyrics are pretty corny. Please just don’t do anything so overt just speak actual nonsense like Jon Mess of Dance Gavin Dance I’d much rather prefer that to whatever the hell this is.

Skin Ticket – 40/100  was looking through the lyrics of this song, listening to it, thinking it would end until I checked, and I had 2 lyrics left of this. Why?

New Abortion – 65/100 Alright the singing is better in this song and the drumming and guitaring is improved. Good job Slipknot at least you’re trying to end it on a good note at the very least.

Metabolic – 65/100 While I wouldn’t say I thoroughly enjoyed any Slipknot song I’ll admit this album is ending off pretty strong and it’s growing on me a good amount.

Iowa – Once again I do encourage you to check out the genius description for this song I’m sure you will find it insightful. On a side note are people from Iowa really built like this? I’m trying to pay attention and enjoy this song but I think for longer songs its harder for them to be slow I need something more akin to Beach Life-In-Death and less whatever this is.

Final Score: 55/100

I can’t tell if I get slight tingles/goosebumps from Slipknot songs because I really like them or because I’m trying to decide whether or not to physically cringe at it, I’m leaning towards the latter. I feel like I’d enjoy this album a bit more if I didn’t have to read whatever the hell Corey Taylor claims is the inspiration for like half of the songs in this album, but to be fair I don’t really need to when his lyrics really ruin a lot of the songs anyways. It’s a shame because in terms of metal music I’ve listened to I really do like some of the instrumentals I find that they carry a lot of energy and go hard enough that I could vibe to them but otherwise I’m just left with, well whatever this is. Overall, I’d say just go find a more serious band because even listening to this casually you’ll hear some random bad lyric and get sucked back into the reality that the Corey Taylor is just a weird dude.
