"Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III" What?

Once again I'm not going to lie and say these days I remember Lil Wayne for being bad. Maybe he was good at a time but to be honest I remember him for two awful Weezer collaborations, and one bad blink-182 collaboration. So when my friend Slayer suggested this album I came in with a feeling I wouldn't like it. Even still, I'll try to keep an open mind since I technically know 2 and a half songs from this album so without further ado, my track-by-track review.

Tha Carter III - Lil Wayne

3 Peat - 33.3/100 Look, I don't actually think the beat to this song is bad, just dated. I just don't enjoy Lil Wayne's delivery at all in any capacity, it's just so ridiculous and hearing him rap about everything from viagra to Hitler is certainly an experience.

Mr. Carter - 75/100 You know what I actually enjoy the chorus to this song which means there's a 70% chance I'll actually enjoy this song and tolerate Lil Wayne's rapping, which says a lot about how I feel about rap music but it's better I enjoy something than nothing in my eyes. To be honest if Lil Wayne didn't do so many adlibs in the chorus this song would probably be rated higher. Why did he randomly started rapping about the Atlanta Hawks and change his voice for the worse. Is it bad to say that this song immediately improved as soon as I heard Jay-Z, I'm not saying he's carrying this track but I'm also not saying he didn't carry this track. I'm almost teetering on saying I enjoying this song but it kind of needs another listen or something.

A Milli - 1.82/100 This beat is so annoying, in fact this entire song is so annoying I don't even care about the homophobia no one should be taking this song seriously. I can't believe I'm saying this but this song makes me appreciate the blink-182 remix of this song with What's My Age Again so much more.

Got Money - 60/100 COOK UP T-Pain. I think the only way this album is going to work for me is songs like this one and Mr. Carter where there are some tracks that sound dated, but are at the very least catchy/more danceable than whatever the hell A Milli is. I'm sorry Lil Wayne is holding this song back bro what the hell is he saying.

Comfortable - 85/100 Wow Lil Wayne should let more good singers do the choruses to his song. What if the solution to making me enjoy him is making him just do more pop-rap songs where I basically just treat his verses as window dressing, no offense. I'd also like to thank Mr. West for this song.

Dr. Carter - 75/100 You know what I'd never actually put this song on in a car, but I actually quite enjoy the concept and storytelling of this song. I think Lil Wayne did a good job with the execution of this whole saving "rappers" concept. I don't think he sounds awful in this album either.

Phone Home - 2/100 Remember when I said that I thought Lil Wayne had a good idea for a song and I thought he did a good job following through and realizing that idea? Well this song is the complete opposite of that. You know for the brief moments I can hear the piano in the beat I don't hate it. It's just a shame all he does is yell in your ears so you can't hear anything else for the chorus. I just don't know if this is better or worse than A Milli.

Tie My Hands - 75/100 What the hell is Robin Thicke whispering in my ear at the beginning? Regardless of the intro this song has significantly more depth than I thought it would have. You know what I didn't know that Lil Wayne had this in him I never really cared about or rated him as a rapper but it's nice to know he was actually good at making music at some point.

Mrs. Officer - 80/100 You know what the concept is a little goofy but the smooth singing and chorus in this song sell it enough for me to actually enjoy this song. Yeah it's still a little dated but I enjoy it. That Rodney King line seemed a bit wild though I must admit. Even still this is a catchy song.

Let The Beat Build - 80/100 Considering how dreadful the beginning of this album was dare I say I'm starting to enjoy this album? I can't believe it. I mean some of the songs are still like having someone shoot you in the chest, but it has more songs I liked than I thought I would. Once again a great beat and a concept for a song that he actually manages to make work? It almost makes you wonder what compelled him to include Phone Home on this album

Shoot Me Down - 75/100 I actually kind of enjoy this slower song and the build up towards the guitar at the end. I think it fits and it works. Nice chorus too of course.

Lollipop - 10/100 I heard the beat for this song kick in and immediately knew what I was getting myself into. Let's just say I'm not a fan of the copious autotune in this song. This song is uncomfortably long.

La La - 0/100 What the fuck is this song?

Pussy Monster - 0/100 What the fuck is this song? The only reason this song is a 0 is because I can't score it any lower.

You Ain't Got Nuthin - 5/100 A very low bar to clear. I was originally going to give this song a higher score but then I realized I was only a minute through it and was so disgusted.

DontGetIt - 0/100 You see I actually like the singing on this song but it's also 9 minutes and there's an 80% chance I don't think it'll be worth all 9 minutes. Why is this song so unbearably long?

Final Score: 55/100

What the hell is this album?? I don't think it's rated a 79 simply because there's some real live grenades in this album, in the worst way possible. Like seriously, if you cut this album down to the nicer poppy hits, and got rid of the corny weird fuck ass songs this album would be so much better, and also not over an hour long. Honestly though, this album was way better than I thought. I'm not saying I thought Lil Wayne was a joke rapper, but I really didn't think he had it in him to be introspective, or to do any song that's a bit more high concept like Let the Beat Build, or Dr. Carter. Not to mention some real good pop hits on his hand too? This album is like a piece of meat just waiting to be trimmed of it's fat, except the fat is rotting and you're concerned it's so bad it ruins the whole meal. Of course even the best parts of this album still sound dated, so I wouldn't say it's aged the best. Even still, I'm almost tempted to say good job Lil Wayne, almost.
