"Glee Season 4" I Can See Why People Hate Glee
Where do I even start with this season of Glee? First of all, I'd like to state that it doesn't know what to be. Glee season 4 suffers significantly from stretching itself out too thin syndrome, and as such the show constantly switches back and forth between New York City and Lima, Ohio. While this might make sense so that viewers can still follow the lives of some of their most beloved characters, the New York City plot is absolutely and utterly boring, and I mean that in the nicest way possible. Kurt becomes an intern at Vogue just for that plotline to basically be dropped as soon as he joins NYADA, no one likes Rachel anymore and frankly I hated Brody, also she was beefing with her dance instructor the entire time it was so bizarre.
Like, I understand being afraid to show off new characters too much, you spend three seasons showcasing all of these characters in dynamics that you grow to love, it can be scary to show off all these new characters in case you alienate the rest of your fanbase. The only issue, as it always is for stretched too thin syndrome, is that you don't show your new characters enough for people to really like them, and as a result it's like some sort of self-fulfilling prophecy. I mean at the very least showcase characters who got shafted to the side a bit, I was so ready to see Tina take a much larger role, but all she is nowadays is super sassy, and it's basically Blaine and the others when it comes to who sings the most.
What makes it even worse is that basically no relationship that finally materialized by the end of season three even stuck, even the cute ones. Rachel and Finn broke up because of distance, Tina and Mike broke up because of distance, Mercedes and Sam broke up because of distance, Kurt and Blaine broke up because of distance, you get what I'm saying? They basically broke up every fan favourite relationship just to fuck around with whatever dynamics they wanted to, and frankly the only new one I even remotely like is the one between Blaine and Sam, every other one just feels weird.
Once again we come back to another recurring issue with Glee, which there are many, and it's that they are so hit or miss when it comes to tackling tough issues, which they try and tackle many. Catfishing? It was alright I guess. School shootings? Done surprisingly tastefully for Glee standards. Gay Marriage? Not sure where they were going for that one. Eating Disorders? Decent too. But the issue is they'll go around and the next episode you immediately have something super weird occur, like Puck dating Kitty even though he's graduated and she's still in high school, whatever Brody and the teacher were supposed to be, and especially Finn kissing Ms. Pilsbury.
Final Score: 45/100
Look, I think this show could actually turn itself back around if it just focused on the high school aspect. I thought it did a surprisingly good job with balancing not having too many cameo's from old members while also focusing on the new ones, though everyone is always craving them. It's just there's too much fluff with the New York City stuff, and frankly this show really should have just ended after season three, it feels a bit directionless and they've lost their mojo. I mean if you're already this far might as well hate watch to the end, that's what I'm doing, but it's very clear that this is the season that made Glee live in infamy.
