"Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always" A Touching Tribute
Look, if you didn't like Power Rangers as a kid, I doubt this movie will appeal to you, it's only an hour long, and it has all the cornball elements that endeared me to the show when I was a child. Look, to make a long story short, think of it as an updated episode of the OG Power Rangers show, because it's dripping in nostalgia from the very first series, just with an updated look that's acceptable for 2023.
I mean, I'm such a big Power Rangers fan it's hard not to say I loved it. I mean look, I love Billy Yost and Walter Emmanuel Jones, but sometimes the delivery of their lines were so off that it made you question how many times they took it, or even if they understood what words like clutch or legit even meant. Despite that, I'll admit, it's a fun watch. From seeing old rangers back again, to seeing old set pieces given new life, I think Yost and Jones did a great job of doing this tribute the justice it deserved, it was fun.
I mean, if you're a fan of any other series other than the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, you'll be out of luck, cause while you might catch their action figure in Rita Repulsa's contraption, they don't really make any sort of appearance. It makes sense though, this was supposed to be a touching tribute to Trini, who tragically died in a car crash some time ago, though it makes one stop and wonder why they chose now to do the tribute. Was is the death of Jason David Frank, the original green ranger that was beloved by so many, arguable a staple in the franchise? Or was it something else.
I mean the fight scenes were definitely slower, and the CGI was really apparent, but to that I say, it's Power Rangers, when did the show not have these problems? Probably my only complain was that Tommy was the green ranger, they never quite explained why he wasn't the white ranger, but to be fair they never explain it in any of the guest appearances, so I suppose Power Rangers lore only goes so far.
Final Score: 72/100
Yeah, I'm biased, what are you gonna do about it? This special rides hard on nostalgia and it knows how to ride it, which is exactly what you expect from a cutesy hour long special. I mean it's not like the anything was particularly egregious by Power Ranger standards, so I say good job guys.
