"Rick and Morty Season 6" We're Getting Somewhere

I'll admit it, I've been a Rick and Morty Fan for quite some time by this point. I remember watching the series around when I was 12 or 13 near the beginning of season 2, I think around grade 7, which would be 2015 or 2016ish, and I never looked back at it. I think as a child, what I really enjoyed, was that it had a bunch of weird, dumb characters, and it never took itself quite too seriously with all of the random absurdist humour. I mean if I had describe this show, it would be like a group of people who are chronically online throw paint at a wall and see what comes out.

Don't get me wrong, I love some blotches, but let's be real, sometimes it does go too far. I'm looking at you Naruto the giant incest baby, plus the weird horse make out, what in the world did I even watch last season? But this isn't about season 5, this is about season 6, which I thought it a good job of fleshing out a show that was clearly beginning to feel too cramped in it's own square. I mean if the entire premise is literally just weird zany adventures, you need some sort of payoff to keep fans satisfied, especially if you're just going to introduce small bits of lore that may never come back again.

I mean in previous seasons, like season 1 and 2, I'm pretty sure it was stated that nothing is really in chronological order, and it's mostly just a random set of adventures, so it's nice to that they're finally trying this whole overarching plot of the season sort of thing. Finally, speaking of this season, I thought it did a fairly decent job of keeping the old Rick and Morty formula alive, while also sprinkling in some new lore for the fans who were there for all the fan theories. I mean by that point there were so many early season theories, I mean even I remember them, so it's nice to see a lot of the old fans have their theories vindicated.

In terms of episodes, this season I think my least favourite has to be Full Meta Jackrick, because I just think it was too on the nose with the meta stuff. Don't get me wrong, I don't think there's anything wrong with poking fun at the fans, but it just feels like all of the fun really got sucked out of that episode just to prove a point. Personally, I think my favourite character has to be Jerry this season, and by a good margin. In previous seasons, I really enjoyed the expansion of Summer as a character, and frankly after the whole divorce thing I'm just glad they finally found a role for him to play.

I mean oftentimes, Rick and Morty fans pretend to all feel like they're just Rick, and instinctively hate Jerry, projecting people they dislike onto him, but I kind of enjoy Jerry? I suppose "identifying" with Rick might come off as cringy now, and frankly liking Rick and Morty has become more than just cringy by this point, but I like what he's become. No longer is he just some bumbling stupid everyone pisses on him type of character, and I like the sort of mutual respect Rick and Jerry have developed for each other over the years.

I'm also appreciating that the writing crew recognizes that for Rick and Morty to continue to be a good show, it needs to move on from the status quo, as the whole Morty starting to become smart and push back against Rick thing is kind of nice.

Final Score: 83/100

I'm not quite sure what else to say about this season. I mean I suppose there wasn't anything too memorable, but I do enjoy that they finally recognize there's a lot of untapped potential in the lore they've laid dormant for years. I mean other than that there was nothing too notable, just another Rick and Morty season, which is a good thing, because this show makes me laugh, and its zany and unpredictable nature is what I enjoy about it so much.
