"Geese - Getting Killed" Still Impressive

Hey look at me I'm reviewing Geese, how original. Look, while my enthusiasm might seemed subdued, it has nothing to do with how talented I think this band actually is. I quite actually enjoy their music, I'm mostly just baffled by how they managed to become so popular. I don't even think of them as a particularly accessible rock outfit, which makes their rise even more baffling. I mean I don't remember 3D Country blowing them as much as this album did. Make no mistake, I actually enjoy this band though, even if I do find them a tad overrated. Though I was a Magdalena Bay fan before Imaginal Disk was released so this may just me being a big hypocrite. Regardless, when my friend Omaid recommended this album, I may have groaned a bit because my twitter feed has somehow become filled with Geese fans I never knew existed, but this album is both good enough, and culturally popular enough to be deserving of a more in-depth review. So without further ado, my track-by-track review.

Getting Killed - Geese

Trinidad - 75/100 A nice, loud, varied taster that does a good job of being an intro track that sort of inoculates you to the sounds you'll be hearing for this album. As a song it feels more like a decent jam sessions you'd love if you heard live, but as a song you'd put in a playlist to hear again I can't quite say it succeeds in that regard.

Cobra - 85/100 I think Cameron Winter's voice fits this sort of sound quite well. It also matches the album cover it's a very sort of catchy, sunny-feeling sort of song.

Husband - 80/100 A bit more of a slow burn sort of track, and a little bit more loose than Cobra, but still good. This track basically sums up how I feel about Geese, which is that they write good tunes and songs at the heart of it, so I openly accept any weird or experimental idea's they may throw my way.

Getting Killed - 80/100 Pretty much how I feel about the last track but to an even greater degree.

Islands of Men - 70/100 Sadly, the magic comes to a bit of a halt with this track. My feelings about it are a mix of how I felt about Trinidad, but to a lesser extent because it is on the longer side and does really just feel like a jam track instead of a tighter song if that makes sense.

100 Horses - 70/100 A good rock song by any metric, but not much more than that. I do like the piano that kicks in at the very end though.

Half Real - 80/100 Another track that is kind of sloppy, but in it's own sort of way that works given Winter's voice, at least to me.

Au Pays du Cocaine - 80/100 I do recall feeling as if this album ends on a stronger note than it began. I have no idea why it's their most popular song though, maybe because it's slower and slightly dreamier? I prefer Cobra myself to be honest.

Bow Down - 85/100 One of my favourite songs off of this album. I love the chorus when he repeats the line ab out bowing down to Maria's bones. Just a great rock track.

Taxes - 80/100 The guitars that come in after the part where he says "You're gonna have to nail me down" don't sound much like the guitars I've heard from this record. They sound like they could be on some indie rock record, but I don't hate them, I kind of dig it.

Long Island City Here I Come - 80/100 Unlike the other longer track on this album I quite enjoy this one. It might be the frenetic pace in Winter's voice it almost sounds like he's grasping for breath to belt out each line as the rest of the band just plays faster and faster.

Final Score: 80/100

This album is still very good. Looking back I would pretty safely say that it could have made my top 10 albums that year, but it certainly was not my favourite rock record from 2025. Re-listening to this album in full did make me appreciate the band though, they certainly do have some talent. Funnily enough they are in fact playing in Toronto very soon so maybe I'll give their other albums a whirl and see if it's worth seeing them live, but something tells me that won't be enough time to really form a strong opinion on them. We'll see though. I am baffled at how much space they've managed to take up, but no matter how I feel I can't help but leave feeling impressed.
