"Batman: Bad Blood" Decent, Fun, Filled with Action

No Tim Drake, no Jason Todd, not even any real Barbara Gordon until the very end, but this movie kind of makes it work. I have been so thoroughly underwhelmed with the past couple of DCAMU movies, especially because they were quite Batman-centric. I felt like they didn't do anything interesting with their adaptations, that the movies were honestly kind of boring and didn't do enough to make them worth watching. I wouldn't say this one really reinvented the wheel in any major way, but it was fun, and frankly that's what I was really hoping for. Let's talk about it.

Honestly? This film just makes me want to go back and read Grant Morrison's Batman, especially runs like Batman Incorporated, which I just found to be very fun in general. I mean this film basically bastardizes much of it, especially with Dick Grayson being Batman in the first half with Damian as his Robin, then the Heretic storyline, only for it all to be dropped halfway through. That is not to say I don't disagree with the decision, I think having Bruce "back" by around the 60% mark of the film is the right decision, and I thought the brainwashing part was an interesting touch.

It really is just ripping off Batman Incorporated and making it a much smaller, contained version. You don't have Batman flying around asking people to join his team, and well the movie is too short to really work that in anyways. My only real complaint? I'm a Nightwing fan they cannot keep on doing my boy like this. There is simply too much Damian praise in these films that is a 12-year-old child at best he can't beat all of these people. Give some victories to my personal favourite man, that's all I ask, do him a little less dirty.

I kind of enjoyed it though. Batwing and Batwoman. I just kind of wish they had a little bit more to give. I liked the small scenes they had but it didn't feel like a real welcoming into the family. I almost feel like while this movie had pretty good action they needed more time to really integrate the two new members of the Batfamily. Also Dick Grayson's relationship with Batman is kind of weird in this universe it's oddly antagonistic when the point is that they bond deeply over their shared trauma of losing their parents. Like the parallel is supposed to be very clear and in the comics he's afraid of taking up the mantle but in this one he just does so in a resentful manner.

Final Score: 70/100

We've finally made it back into the watchable territory for the DCAMU. I would say this is a pretty fun time considering it's hardly over an hour. It's got some good action, helps set up some stuff for future movies, and pretty much wraps up the whole Damian-Talia storyline that's been lurking in the background for these past few Batman films anyways. If you like this film just go read Grant Morrison's Batman run though, or just read Batman Incorporated. Keep in mind I am biased though since I did read those comics as a kid and as such have fond memories of both the art style and the storylines throughout.
