"Futurama Season 1" It's the Space Simpsons

Yes, yes, I know I said I was watching The Boondocks but in Canada you have to buy it on Apple TV which is a pain so it's kind of annoying to go through it. So I've also been dabbling in other shows and frankly, this hasn't been the worst idea so far. There have been multiple times I have called this show The Simpsons or Space Simpsons by accident, despite the fact that my only actual exposure to The Simpsons has been clips online. So make of that what you will, I'm not saying it negatively or positively, I'm just saying I assume this is what The Simpsons would be like if it was set in space. But otherwise, it was a pretty decent first season, let's talk about it.

You see, it was actually pretty novel watching the first season of Futurama for "the first time." I say this in air quotes because I'm pretty sure I had actually already watched a whole rerun of this season when I was a very small child looking for anything on Cartoon Network. Of course, I was not particularly interested in Futurama, it was too character focused and didn't have any superheroes. But I'd put on this show at night before I went to bed, and I was surprised at the fact that I distinctly remembered both the premises and plot points to over half the episodes. Of course, the first season of Futurama is only actually nine episodes, so it will be seen whether or not me coming in completely blind will help or detract from the second season for me.

Otherwise, it was pretty solid. The concept of someone being frozen and time and introduced to the future felt fresh and funny. I don't know if it'll make for a good 20+ episode season, but it feels like the writers clearly have a lot of meat on the bone they want to work with, and I never found myself bored learning about all of these weird and wacky situations the writers had come up with. That's not to say I was laughing hilariously the entire time, frankly The Boondocks is what I would describe as tiers above this show in terms of comedy so far, but it's only the first season, so there's still time for them to grow some legs.

Final Score: 70/100

Other than that I just don't have much else to say. It's a fine enough show, especially as one that I put on right before I sleep to give me something to watch. Of course How I Met Your Mother started off like that for me, and I quickly found myself devouring that show at such a rapid pace it surprised even me. So far though, I just don't think it'll do that for me. Maybe Futurama will become more sci-fi or high-concept, but at the moment I haven't quite endeared myself to any character yet, and at times I just wonder if I would be better off rewatching Rick and Morty or something along those lines. Either way I think I'll just alternate between this show and the Boondocks? We'll see how far I can get first.
