"Only Murders in the Building Season 5" Just a Sad
Really? This is the season? I have to say Only Murders in the Building season five has been nothing short of a disappointment. I mean seriously. It forgets everything that made the show good, and mainly just meanders around hoping that by showing off new characters it'll be enough of a diversion from the fact that they don't even take their own premise seriously. I mean first of all, they drop the whole podcasting bit because they decide to quickly sign contracts, and then decide to never discuss the fact that their whole livelihood was taken away until the very end when they all suddenly become podcast fans again. Then, the whole mafia/mob thing is only ever discussed for like TWO WHOLE EPISODES. The worst part is, to top it all off, the big reveal about how the murdered was pulled off sounds too convenient, easy, and stupid. It's not clever or ingenious in any real way, it's just bad. Let's talk about it.
What was the point of this season. Let's start with Charles. What is his arc this season? Is it the family that they conveniently dropped? Of course not. Is it about his woeful love life? Kind of? He just sort of takes fake testosterone pills and it all culminates in him climbing up a pole, and if that sounds as boring and as random as I thought it was, you'd be right. Then we move onto Oliver, whose entire plotline about maybe moving out basically just resolves in, "uhh my wife is still traveling to film so I guess I can keep my apartment," like seriously? He has like one flashback too about his childhood and it's kind of shoved in. Also why is Meryl Streep around her characters role basically has to be hamfisted into every season. Don't even get me started on Selena Gomez man. THE is a bad character and just annoying. No self-awareness, and her importance on this season could have easily been filled by anyone. Can we give her a consistent love interest by the way? It's like Benny Blanco said she wasn't allowed to touch other dudes in this show.
Which brings me to problem two, the entire premise of this show is old mob verses new mob, and the gang being caught up in this underground world they have after like two episodes, do nothing of actual interest with the old mob, and drop the whole old mob act to have them follow a bunch of rich people around as they do this tired merry go round dance with them all season. Then of course, you shove in the mayor, and the doorman, and it's just too many ingredients that don't go particularly well with each other. This season basically spit out a bunch of loose ends, then just clumped them together at the end and said voila, there's your beautiful dish.
I think that's the worst part, this dish is like nutraloaf, yes it technically constitutes a meal, but no, no ones going to enjoy it. The ending shoving the mayor in was so boring, all of the clues they had begun to collect at the beginning just waved away so easily. It turns out instead of following some trail it was just playing whack a mole with who could carry around the mayors finger the longest. I mean seriously? Not to mention they love shoving in side characters for the sake of it. I like detective Williams but sometimes her role is a stretch. I love Theo but him showing up randomly this season was also a stretch. That dude with the eye patch was fine and significantly better than whatever the hell Howard was this season.
Final Score: 20/100
This season was one big wet fart. Hopefully they can make the show slightly dark in colour again. Maybe they can even have them podcasting again. Like nowadays every time I watch the show I'm just reminded of what it once was. I'm not even going to finish this paragraph. I have nothing left to say about this show other than it should get better. Because what we have right now is just sad.
