"How I Met Your Mother Season 9" The Ending is as Bad as Advertised
KILL TED MOSBY, KILL TED MOSBY, KILL TED MOSBY. These calls for violence are not unwarranted, I'm just fucking stupefied that someone genuinely thought this is how you end a television show after nine seasons. What was the point? What was the point? I love this show to death, and this might be the first show with a laugh track that I've really enjoyed while I was an adult. Nine consistent sitcom seasons, with a cast of great chemistry, and a revolving door of life subjects touched upon that never felt too old, and this is how they end the show? If you just wanted Robin and Ted to get together in the end WHY WOULD YOU SPEND AN ENTIRE SEASON ON THE WEDDING OF ROBIN AND BARNEY.
I just don't get it. What was the point? I mean this season was an uphill battle anyways. The mother is finally revealed, and Marshall was apparently not available for most of it hence why he spends half of the season sidelined in this massive road trip. Even still, even outside of the usual Maclaren's setting, despite taking place in the span of basically four days, they were making it work. Masterfully weaving the past and the present, finally having Ted let go of the ghost of Robin, literally by the way (though it was a bit cheesy having her float in the sky like a balloon). Even still, in my mind I thought I knew Barney and Robin were sacred. I mean I didn't really see it, but they spent so long convincing me it would work, I wanted to see all this investment pay off, until it didn't.
I mean come on, the alternate ending was right there. It was so easy. I would have still been disappointed Robin and Barney broke up, especially considering it has more to do with Robin than anything (surprisingly), I do find it adorable that he found it in him to love a child, though I'm unsure of what that living arrangement is supposed to be like. Regardless, it was just depressing. In a show that routinely tells you to follow your heart, and let destiny take the wheel, it was out of character for the show to end on a relatively somber note. This show is about believing in magic, not about letting life beat you to death. I can't believe they seriously thought the best way to end the show was to have the mother die after we barely get to see her, and then have old Ted end up with old Robin. Talk about trying to have your cake and eat it too. I can forgive many things, but that was so clearly such a copout ending to appease both parties.
Even still, I loved this show, and thought this last season was good. All of the callbacks and references were good, and I thought they did a decent job of stretching out this last season even if it was based on a concept that gets undone in 10 minutes. I don't think I'm as mad as I was before when I just finished the show, but I simply refuse to accept that stupid ending. He really told his kids that entire story just so he could get their permission to bang Robin? It's ridiculous to be honest. To be honest, I don't know who made the showrunners sad, but I don't get why they needed to make it all depressing in general. The last season was happy, it was also about saying goodbye, but did we need Robin leaving everyone, basically ditching the friend group, and everyone being pretty sad?
Final Score: 70/100
I think I've seen worse ass falls. This show narrowly saves itself because it does indeed show the mother quite a significant amount throughout this season, and I thought she was quite adorable. And frankly this show is nearly saved by the bell considering they undo it in like ten minutes. Even still, I will not let it taint my love of this TV show, and the blast I've had watching all of it this summer. It's kind of funny realizing how old it is that 2030 is pretty much the only date that hasn't been reached yet in this show. Or that it has a laugh track which feels so out of place, even for early 2010's, at least to me. But who knows, the gang will always have my heart, and this show is firmly one of my favourite shows of all time.
