"Anri - Timely!!" A Timeless Album
What do I even write for this intro? I mean I do love me some J-Pop. My love of Ginger Root is proof enough of that. I also do have a soft spot for that retro Japan vibe that some anime music gives off. Like I know the really popular ones that got popular on Youtube like, Stay With Me. I really just don't know what to say because while I do love me some J-Pop I'm just so unfamiliar with the genre as a whole to really say anything other than I do love this genre. And you know what, shoutout to my friend sweaty for recommending this because I would love to get to know more songs from this genre. So without further ado, I excitedly present my track-by-track review.
Timely!! - Anri
CAT'S EYE - (NEW TAKE) - 75/100 You see I searched up the lyrics to this track expecting some perfect English translation, which does not exist. But honestly? this is danceable music, I don't particularly care about what the lyrics are, I'm just here to vibe. Not the catchiest or brightest track out there, but it's done a damn good job of setting the tone.
WINDY SUMMER - 85/100 Getting strong Superficial Love from Magdalena Bay (and some artist I can't remember) vibes from this song, in a good way of course. J-Pop is basically like crack to me so expect some pretty high scores that may offend some people, but I don't care. It's just shimmering, bright, it encapsulates an atmosphere so well.
STAY BY ME - 80/100 Even in a slower format this genre just works. I do love the way the bass sounds in this song it's just fantastic. I even enjoy the guitar solo later on in the song. It really just makes you want someone to stay by you.
A HOPE FROM SAD STREET - 80/100 This album is just incredible man. It's so dreamy, and I am such a sucker for synths. I just find it hard to illustrate just how much I enjoy the songs on this album. Like when you're in a bad mood, and want to get into a good mood it's hard not to stop a grin after listening to this.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE - 75/100 Something something my bias against slow songs is rearing it's ugly head again. I mean I gave this song a 75 it's not like I hate it. Maybe it's growing on me, maybe I do need someone to tell me I'm not alone.
I CAN'T STOP THE LONELINESS - 85/100 I mean do I even need to say anything about this song. Just play it man. The instruments doing their own solo's, it's just upbeat and beautiful. If you hate this song is there any joy in your life.
SHYNESS BOY - 85/100 This chorus has a nice groove to it it might be up there as one of my favourites off of the album
LOST LOVE IN THE RAIN - 70/100 This song is alright but it doesn't feel as good compared to the rest of the great songs the albums been giving.
DRIVING MY LOVE - 80/100 The bass returns and is more glorious than ever. It's a fantastic and wonderful feeling.
GOOD-NIGHT FOR YOU - 80/100 Probably the best slow song off of the album for me, I think it works well as a closer too, which is weird because it isn't the final song?
Remember Summer Days - 85/100 Ok I take back what I said about the previous song this song is also an excellent choice for a closer. It's sort of like a final call to make sure you remember what this album is about, and why it's so good.
Final Score: 85/100
This album lives up to its name for me. It feels timely. When you need a pick me up, or an injection of poptimism, this album is timely and there for you. I just love it. It's one of those albums that's an easy listen, and doesn't need a second thought really. You just vibe out and enjoy it. I could see myself playing this album on a car ride home and zoning out because all I'm focusing on during my drive home is this album. It's that good really, and I'm not afraid to admit it. I don't know if this is the best album from 1983, but what I do know is that it's an album from 1983 that I'd gladly continue playing no matter what happens nor what time period I'm in. Bravo Anri, you did it.
