"How I Met Your Mother Season 3" Where is This Going?
Now, don't get me wrong, I still love this show, and finished season three significantly faster than I thought, but I'm started to sense something that may cause this show to stagnate. And no, it isn't the glut of guest celebrity appearances, which honestly I don't mind, because it's not like they play themselves anyways. No, it's the fact that this show is a bit afraid of some change, and what change it does introduce I'm not fully convinced it's weird. Now, don't get me wrong, season four could prove me wrong, but I just don't really agree with the direction this show seems to be trying to nudge itself in.
Let's start off with this fear of change, or at least what I perceive it to be. Look, I understand that Lily and Marshall are married, and that you can't really rock that dynamic too much. After all, they are "the couple" of the friend group, and frankly I think the show was worse off when those two weren't together. So, why would you spend multiple episodes talking about their financial hardships, and how they're going to bite the bullet to have the move into this apartment, only for them to not actually move into the apartment. It makes no sense to me. Also no offense but Lily's credit card debt was funny at first but also kind of absurd. Though to be honest money in this show was never quite something that made sense in the first place and I just suspended my disbelief for.
What I'm basically saying is that it's hard to eat your cake and have it too. Like they had Lily and Marshall break up together just to end up back together again after like four episodes, and they had this whole big thing about moving out, just to end up staying in the same apartment with Ted for the rest of the season. I would complain about them basically doing the whole fakeout thing with Robin this time, but honestly her relationship with Ted felt like it was going to be broken up eventually so I never really believed in it. Plus her radical change after visiting Argentina would never stick because it would have altered her character too much to be enjoyable by anyone.
Which brings me to the new developments of this season, Ted and Stella, and Barney and Robin for some godforsaken reason. Now, I don't hate Stella at the moment, she mostly just throws me off because I know her mainly as Beth from Rick and Morty. To be honest, I'd probably like her more if she actually appeared in the show. No offense to her but Britney Spears had more screentime it felt like and Stella's relationship with Ted mostly feels forced to me right now. I think it needs more screentime, and hopefully not in the form of a proposal like Ted does at the end of the season. Also I really don't like this idea of Barney and Robin, it feels easily like the most forced thing this season. I just don't see it at all, and as a Barney truther, it feels weird to see him with someone from the friend group, if he finds happiness, I feel like it has to be outside of it. I'm not saying the groups starting to get weird, but it's starting to get weird.
Final Score: 77/100
I still enjoyed this season, I mean I watched it so quickly it even surprised me, but it's hard to ignore the fact that the direction it's going in is odd. Also why is Marshall the only one who gets to change his hair? It feels so weird considering other than a slight Lily change everything else in the show has been unmoving so far. Perhaps it's time to bring Ted and Robin back? I don't know. All I know is that I need to get back to just watching the show.
