"Fullmetal Alchemist" One of the Best Manga Ever
Some things are just so perfect that you can't help yourself and you go through it as fast as you can because that's how good it is. That's how I felt watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. still one of my favourite anime's of all time, it's not overrated in the slightest in my opinion, and is worth every drop of hype to me. So, when I started reading manga again, I knew I had to revisit it. After all, I had heard the anime was incredibly faithful, so why not see if there's anything I don't remember.
And by God, I forgot how good this story was. It's almost unfair really that this manga is only like 105 chapters. It makes me so jealous that the author was able to create something so well-written, so concisely. I mean easily the best example of this would be the whole alchemical system. It's never quite explained fully in depth, and you don't get to see that many alchemists, but you just get it. From the first time you see them explain equivalent exchange, to the human transmutation between Al and Ed, and the discovery of the philosophers stone. Nothing ever really feels like that much of an ass pull, it's never fully quite delved into with "The Truth" and all of the different regions, but it's just enough.
Then there are the characters. You don't see some long, drawn out romance between Winry and Ed, or even anything from Riza and Roy, because you don't need one. This manga knows what it's about and rarely does it ever stray from it plot: uncovering the truth behind the government conspiracy in Amestris. That's not to say this manga isn't goofy, it has plenty of it's lighthearted moments, after all Ed and Al are only teenagers during this entire show, but it understands its not there for fan service. For some characters it never spends too much time fleshing out on either. Like at most they'll get some pages, but it's not like we spend entire issues explaining the entire Armstrong family. Did I forget to mention Scar? Who regardless of all the killings is easily one of the coolest characters in the show? Not just from a design standpoint, but his whole backstory, and his brothers arms too?
Final Score: 95/100
I would write more in my review for this manga, but honestly, I don't think it needs it. This manga is that good, and should continue to be the gold standard in my opinion. Just go read it. I have nothing to say other than it's amazing. There's never a dull moment, and you just end up astonished that there's not more. I'd say it even ends well too. So bravo.
