"Kid Kapichi - This Time Next Year" Aggressively Generic
I would say something here but I have absolutely no strong opinions on both post-punk as a genere or Kid Kapichi. I will say that apparently a bunch of my friends used to like this record though apparently everyone has collectively decided to no longer like it. So stop wasting time here is my track-by-track review.
This Time Next Year - Kid Kapichi
First World Goblins - 50/100 My strongest thoughts on this track is that it's fine sonically and lyrically, if a little plain, but it's not particularly catchy nor does it evoke me to dance or want to mosh. If you put this song during some generic riot, rebellious, or fighting montage in a tv show or movie I would not bat an eye nor would I ever feel the need to search up the song.
Working Man's Town - 65/100 This one's a little on the nose 70isn't it? I think from the two songs I've listened to so far the lyrics seem a bit shallow or surface level. Like the first song is just first world problems complaining, this track just complains it's hard for the working man but never elaborates on it much. I think the chorus on this track being catchier does help with it being better than the last track, but that isn't saying much.
Sardines - 60/100 "You're angry and you don't know why" pretty much summarizes this band for me. Like they're angry that's for sure. But I feel as if the generic Netflix soundtrack comparison I made earlier is pretty fair.
Self Saboteur - 65/100 I think the short chorus on this song is what's endearing this song to me. That's not to say that I think this song really buckles any of the trends I've noticed so far. I mean if you're going to sound derivative then you need to make sure you're really catchy otherwise you're never going to stand out among all those "endlessly playlistable bands".
Violence - 45/100 The bridge in this song is the only part I like. Not in the sense that I think the bridge is so good it makes me fall in love with all the other parts of the song like some Weezer songs. Moreso in the sense that these lyrics do absolutely nothing for me .
Thugs - 40/100 I can't tell if it's because I've been listening to this album longer or not but the chorus to this song is pretty annoying. Like yes we know society hates you can you please just do a little more either sonically or lyrically.
Glitterati - 50/100 I know Glitterati is supposed to be slang but the way the singer just sings about it kind of makes me laugh. At least he's stopped complaining about how life sucks without elaborating on it though.
Fomo Sapiens - 60/100 It only took like seven tracks for this album to come with a song that sounds remotely different. Judging off of the verses I was expecting this song to be a bit poppier but then the chorus kicked in and no it's not soaring or catchy it's just kind of the same thing the bands been doing the entire album.
Dotted Line - 45/100 This is basically the same story as the last song but worse. The verses sound different sonically and gave me some semblance of hope but then the chorus came in and it's just the same old thing. British people using a vocoder should not be allowed the score is going down for that part alone.
What Would Your Mother Say - 60/100 Ok so I can't tell if the first half just blended together sonically for me or I just really do think the second half of the album is more interesting sonically. Too bad they weren't put in the first half because by this point I'm kind of tired of the album/waiting for something interesting.
Don't Kiss Me (I'm Infected) - 25/100 This song is titled exactly the way Waterparks would title their songs, and I mean that in the worst way possible, but at least they capitalize words. Ew, the way they say "Don't Kiss me I'm Infected" is so gross.
Hope's A Never Ending Funeral - 75/100 Lana Del Rey type song title. Are they really ending this album on a slow song? You know what, I actually kind of enjoy it because it's not that hard to do slow songs, and frankly the rest of this album has just been so absolutely vapid for me that this is kind of interesting.
Final Score: 50/100
Wow I kind of enjoyed this album for a little bit with that last track. Until the deluxe songs came back and I was violently ripped back into reality. I do genuinely think that if you put this band on all the big Spotify rock playlists no one would bat an eye, and I mean that in the most derogatory sense possible. Like sure it's not the easiest listening experience, but that's only because they yell all of their lyrics and the music is loud. Otherwise I just don't care for this album at all. It's fine, and if you do get something out of it, then sure. I've liked my fair share of derivative or generic bands before, but usually I find their tracks catchy, so I'll look over the very clear flaws, but with this album I just don't feel that way at all.
