"Glee Season 6" A Limp to the Finish Line or the Best they Could Do?

I can't believe I am writing this review to say that honestly Glee has become one of those TV shows that I almost enjoyed watching too much. I mean it makes no sense, it has these bizarre offensive lines, it attempts to cover practically any song under the sun, and it focuses mainly on high school. That is not to say it is without fault, I have gone ad nauseum about how disgusting I felt half of season four, and almost all of season five of Glee had become, but honestly, season six is a bit of a return to form. I mean don't get me wrong, if Cory Monteith never died, him taking over the New Directions with all the new members they introduced still would have been better, but I would be lying if a small part of me didn't smile while the cast came onto the stage to sing I Lived by OneRepublic.

While this season is only 13 episodes, and hardly focuses on the new kids as much as it should, I do have to admit, it was good to see them finally admit defeat and go back to where the show belonged, the lowly Mckinley High in Lima, Ohio. I mean don't get me wrong, I don't like how all the characters magically returned to Mckinley, almost too much if we're being honest, but I also recognize that this season was never about setting up a sequel, rather finally closing the book on a story that never really had any right to continue after Monteiths death. I mean technically they really should have never gone past season three, but the whole Finn becoming the new teacher thing had potential.

I'm not saying that Glee magically got all of their mojo back, and that I felt like all of the magic had suddenly returned to the show, but I would be lying if I said it didn't at the very least reignite some of the embers that had been on life support ever since the show decided to completely devote it's time to New York. I mean they started to overdo it with the nostalgia, they practically had an alumni in every single episode, and they had way too many insult-fueled rants, which should only be used sparingly, and they drop any pretense of believability, particularly with Sue. I mean she becomes a literal terrorist she poisons the entire water supply of a school, not to mention the fact that she has this creepy hurt locker. Yet people still will say she was less problematic than Will Schuester somehow?

There is a bit of a return to form though. The new characters are more interesting than their season four predecessors, they actually start tackling harder issues again, and shocker, but the stories are centered around the students being in high school (though I felt like Coach Beiste being transgender really devalued her character growth in earlier seasons). Did the show become a too fan-servicey by this point? I mean definitely what was up with the whole Klaine storyline, and them getting married last second too? Terrible, just terrible. But did the showrunners also show that they still had it in them, and that this boat was simply too damaged for them to steer, I'd say so.

Final Score: 70/100

It is my great pleasure to say that I actually enjoyed this season of Glee. I'd call this show my guilty pleasure but the truth is I wouldn't say I'm ashamed to say I enjoyed this show. In fact, I'm ashamed of what it became but ultimately I'd probably re-watch it again if someone asked me to. I am very glad, that Glee managed to slowly piece itself back together this season, because I can say that without a doubt, that it has been one of the only bright spots in my life during this very challenging school year. I mean it brings a smile to my face, and I've grown so attached to these characters, even the ones I hate. When I first thought about Glee all I knew was that they sang Don't Stop Believin', and were emblematic of cringy theater kids, especially those ones who listened to Glee covers outside of the show. However, now after finally finishing the show, I can say proudly, that I am a gleek through and through, and that all of the songs and memories created are forever in my heart, and I will never stop thinking about this show every time I hear Don't Stop Believin'
