"Glee Season 2" It Gets Better

If I had to list out my main complaints with Glee season one, it would mostly just be about the fact that they spend way too long on all of the romantic drama, whether it's Finn, Rachel, Terri, Mr. Shuester, Emma, or Quinn you can't escape it. Look, it's ok to to have romance, after all the premise is pretty skeletal, it's just a show that's meant to have songs in-between, and what better than love to help fill in? So when it comes to season two of Glee I can safely report that the show mostly does away with it, but sadly not all of it.

Look, it's not that I hate romance, I mostly just hated Terri, but the truth is I only like drama if it's actually interesting and not beaten to death. Like Santana and Brittany? Yeah even if Santana is bitchy she still is hot/sings well and her slow ascent into lesbian icon is cool. Blaine and Kurt? Blaine actually didn't take for me at first but he's grown on me significantly. Mike and Tina? Well I love Mike Chang and it's almost certainly because he's Asian. By far, and I mean by far the biggest perpetrator of completely useless (that is not to say that any of the side plots in this show are useful) love stories is the Finn - Sam - Rachel - Quinn and like sometimes Puck side plot. Like it's already so beaten to death, and for them to throw in the Jesse St. James wrench again at the end of the season made it worse. It just felt like they were rehashing old storylines, when there could have been other more featured couples rather than one that's already broken up once before.

Though thankfully not everything is a rehash of season 1. One change I'm very glad for in this season is the introduction of new characters, and other than Emma's dentist boyfriend Carl, I don't think I actually hate any of them. While Sam's homeless storyline was handled pretty bizarrely, I think his nerdy charm and big mouth were kind of adorable, whenever he wasn't trying to have a pissing contest with Finn that is. Coach Beiste also grew on me significantly. At first when Sue and Will were teaming up I was interested to see how that dynamic would work, but basically after that first episode I found myself frequently yelling "The Beiste" on my TV every time Coach appeared on stage. And of course I couldn't finish this paragraph without mentioning Blaine. Look, I'll admit, he was almost too nice and charismatic, I was a little distrusting of him, but I think it was mostly the warblers outfit. Seeing him now, without the warblers outfit (which he loses in season 3), honestly his relationship with Kurt is really adorable, even if  he is a bit of a flat character.

In terms of favourite songs, it easily has to be Santana's wicked rendition of Valerie, or perhaps I'm Not Going to Teach your Boyfriend how to Dance, which is an underrated little dance pop tune. In terms of the original songs they introduced this season, a part of me hopes this just won't become the norm. It's not that I hate them, in fact I actually enjoyed them a lot more than I thought. But Glee is about the covers, you listen to them belt out your favourite covers, not to sing original songs. I don't think I would say that the song choice becomes worse this season. In particular, I kind of enjoyed the showcase episode on Rumours by Fleetwood Mac and wouldn't mind more of them. One thing I notice as I watch season 3 is that they try and have more songs from musicals, but they need a better variety of them, otherwise interest is lost really quickly.

Final Score: 83/100

I would say that this season is a pretty sizeable upgrade over season two. I can't say there's really anything that I felt was handled worse. Were there less moments that I felt were out of pocket or gasp worthy? Yeah of course, but to be honest they begin to lose their shock value the more you expect them, and frankly I feel like it's starting to feel less like "omg" and more like "wait is this like actually racist?" To be fair the jokes were always pretty offensive, but you could always write them off because of how funny they were. Frankly, I'm still not sure how to feel about the offensive lines because like I probably shouldn't love them as much as I do, but that's whatever. I would call Glee my guilty pleasure, but honestly I'm pretty proud to say that watching with my sister Glee is one of the main things I look forward to these days.
