"Zombieland" If Only It Had More

Look, I'm not saying that this movie was bad by any means, but I do have to say that oddly enough, it had everything but a proper plot? I mean it checks all the boxes for what should be a pretty memorable action movie, loveable cast? Check. Unique final fight scene? Check. Big budget? Check. Not too long? Of course. Final message about how being together is the only way we can stay human in the face of great horror and tragedy? Check. Even still, both my sister and I came out of this film wondering, that's it? Not in the sense that we felt it was lacking in any particular department, it was just, the plot basically does not exist.

Let me explain. So Zombieland can be explained as, four people just fucking around until they kind of reach Los Angeles. This movie almost feels like setup in a sense? I mean sure it is cool to see them explore a post-apocalyptic America, and Woody Harrelson's character is indeed fun as hell, but you're just left wondering when somethings really going to ramp up, when the plots going to form. Hell half of this movie is literally them betraying each other and trying to get back at each other for betraying them. In a sense I'm almost impressed that this movie managed to reach the 90 minute mark because I really feel like it could have been all explored in the span of like 20 minutes

Despite, all of that criticism I just piled on, it was a fine movie, at least for a first watch. I mean I would never put it on a second time, and I'm not sure I'd ever put the second movie on, but God does the cast carry this movie so hard. I was even pleasantly surprised by the Bill Murray inclusion they had, as odd as it was. Somehow, even in the apocalypse, they make the threat feel smaller than it really is, it seems more like an everyone's somehow left the world and zombies are just there sometimes movie.

Look, if nothing makes sense, that's because this movie is mostly just there for the spectacle of killing movies. There's no other way to put it. Not much makes sense, and frankly a part of me is questioning how this movie got such a high review. The longer I write this review the more I think about this movie and the more I sour on it to be honest. Jesse Eisenberg's character is kind of weird, and frankly Woody Harrelson carries this movie.

Final Score: 45/100

Maybe you'll find more enjoyment out of it than I will, but honestly, I'm not sure what this movie is supposed to be. A witty commentary or survival guide on how to live in a zombie apocalypse? I wouldn't really say so. A movie with a loveable cast enduring despite all the hardships they face in their way? Eh it's kind of shoved in at the very end. A thrilling plot about trying to find the last remnants of humanity? Does Bill Murray count? Scratch everything I said in the beginning, actually maybe not, it's just that plot is really important to a movie making sense, and without it this movie really doesn't function at all.
