"Mr. & Mrs. Smith" That's It???
I'm going to be completely honest with you, I only watched this movie because I heard they were remaking it, and honestly the premise sounds kind of fun. However, I can report that after watching this movie, it's pretty overrated. Talking to my friends, they have all said that the movie is hot, which is fine, people are allowed to have their opinions, but honestly? This movie should have been at least ten times better than the end product. A movie with as interesting as a premise as this should not have to be relying on hot leads, which by the way, I will say I wasn't really attracted to either, though maybe that's just my aversion to white people.
I mean it wasn't a bad film, I wouldn't rate this under a 60, it's just, it's kind of weird. Like, the pacing is all off. I know action films don't really have that strong of a plot, but when you actually have a good premise for what should be a funny action movie, you should really capitalize on it. The movie goes, they're two spies, really long and slow intro, then they go foil each others mission. After that they try and hunt each other down, that goes on for like an hour, it looks like the movies about to climax, then boom. They team up, which is fine, but this all happens in like the last 30 minutes of the movie, and honestly they probably should have let it breathe more because by that point both my sister and I were mostly checked out with this film.
Speaking of which, is this movie really even that good for spy movie standards? Maybe I'm just used to "mysterious music" and slick transitions/movements, but like this movie did not give you that sort of vibe at all. There are many scenes that I feel drag on a bit too long, and frankly I feel like if the music and videography were better, this movie would be a lot more memorable to me. Like even the intro, at least have it be a bit snappier, there is no reason for this movie to be 2 hours long, maybe teetering on it, but I felt like this movie should have been a lot snappier. You don't really get to any action until like over 20 minutes into the film, because it's just a really slow montage of a therapy session, and them just fucking around. I think if this movie had a bit more about the spy stuff, and about their marriage, it would be better, but I feel like not a lot happens for a movie that's a lot longer than you think.
Would I ever recommend it again? Eh, I mean if my friends put it on I guess it could be filler. I guess it's just that it's relying really hard on the action to carry it, but I feel like the actions kind of lackluster compared to what I'm used to now from spy movies. I won't go as far to say that a film like Red Notice was filmed better, or had better music, but like it felt more like a spy movie than this one? I just think I'm used to all these classic tropes, and they're just not present, and so you're just kind of left wondering "so what exactly is this movie supposed to be about?"
Final Score: 55/100
I mean I wasn't expecting anything fantastic, but I do feel like this is a bit of a wasted premise. I do hope the TV show is better, because I feel like this premise could have been explored a lot more. I mean they just kind of find out that they're spies, they try and kill each other, then it's just them saving each other. Is it action montages? Is this movie's issue that they have way too many action montages and like nothing in between to link them together/make me care? I think that might be it, also I don't really get this whole Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt obsession, though I do remember them being some super couple, especially when I was a kid. Anyways listen to Till the End by Jessie Ware, it's stuck in my head and that songs ridiculously good.
