"How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" Comfort, Comfort, Comfort
Can someone please confirm that Matthew McConaughey looks like Christian Bale in American Psycho in this movie, because the entire time I could not get rid of the association in my head. Well, I could pretty easily, because even though my mind kept on telling me he was Bale, I was focused on this movie, which was surprisingly adorable considering the reviews. Everything on Google tells me that this movie should be pretty mediocre, it's plot kind of falls apart if you stare at it too quickly, it hasn't really woven itself into the cultural fabric in a way that it was really remembered, yet despite it all it perseveres.
I think the reason is pretty obvious, the chemistry between Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey works, and they carry the show. They really did feel like a real couple, and particularly the part where they visit Ben's family was so adorable. Throughout this entire film you're kind of offended, Andie tries so hard to ruin a relationship you can see her really falling for, and throughout it all you never really question Ben's loyalty. I suppose that's technically a point against this movie, it kind of makes Andie seem like a bad person, when it should be very clear they're both using each other. I think the reason I felt like it was a bit one-sided was because Matthew McConaughey is very charming, so that might be it.
On a side note, can I say how the soundtrack to this movie is kind of underrated? I'm not the craziest about You're So Vain, but Let's Stay Together, and Kiss Me help give this movie that warm sort of fuzzy 2000's charm that just makes you smile. Frankly, other than the fact that I sided with Ben a little too much, my only complaint is that the plot's a bit flimsy. Don't get me wrong, the movies good enough that you can definitely suspend your disbelief with it, but they do so much in 10 days, and I feel like if this movie was like lets say 3 months, or 6 months, I don't think it'd change much, and actually make the climax feel stronger. I mean they do a lot together in 10 days, but also it's just 10 days how in love can you feel?
Other than that I don't have much to say. I'll say this, when watching this movie you do think it'd be one of those movies that'd be 90 minutes tops, not 2 hours, but honestly it doesn't do too bad of a job making sure it isn't too padded. I mean what more can I say, it won't blow your socks off, it's not some experimental art film, but it does it's job well, it's cute, it's happy, it's hopeful.
Final Score: 70/100
As always, love perseveres, and I'm all for it. No seriously, this is such a cute and adorable movie. There are routinely moments in it where both my sister and I were smiling about how happy this movie made us. I wouldn't consider it the best Rom Com I've ever watched, but I'm not even sure what that'd be, what I do know is this movie is worth it. I'm glad letterboxd looks back at this movie fondly because this movie certainly deserves a higher rating on Rotten Tomatoes, MetaCritic, and IMDB.
