"Harley Quinn Season 3" What Happened?
Was Harley Quinn always this bad? I mean I remember watching the first two seasons on Netflix. It had this format of Harley leading her own squad of super-villains, and everything made sense. At times I even enjoyed parts of it, particularly Ivy's re-connection with humanity, especially as she got closer to Kite Man. Look, I bashed their decision to have Harley and Ivy reconnect, but I don't remember it being this bad. Was Kite Man holding everything together? That was never a thought that crossed my mind, because I actually enjoyed characters like Frank, Clay Face, King Shark, but this season they all feel like nuisances, so let me explain why I feel this way.
First off, this season just feels so aimless. If you could describe what the plot of this season is, it would be, it kind of focuses on Harley and Ivy's relationship, but also not? Like there's literally an entire episode dedicated to Joker basically fighting the PTA and suddenly becoming a socialist? I'm not quite sure to be honest. Part of the issue is that I feel like if you dissected every single episode's plot underneath would be a thinly veiled issue the writers had, relationship-related or not. I mean it was like ping pong, first it's Gordon vs Joker for a mayoral campaign, a random Batman subplot that went nowhere (which only ended up being setup for next season), and basically the dissolution of the gang from the first couple of seasons.
Not to mention the voice acting, the voice acting is horrendous. Look, it's ok if a show doesn't take itself too seriously, look at Rick and Morty, I love that show, and I would hardly call it serious, but part of the comedy comes from the voice actors actually trying, and pretending as if what they're saying or doing makes any sense. I mean I'm looking at you Poison Ivy, some of the line deliveries from her have been atrocious this season. I know technically one of them was for a bad gag, but at the same time you kind of have to at the very least say the rest of your other lines properly, though I'd have a hard time saying it too if I had to read some of the dialogue.
Look you can dissect Batman and his lore all you want, frankly there's more than enough Batman-related content as is, so pointing out the hypocrisy is fine, but it's hard to take seriously when your main characters don't really have any real motivations. Just look at Poison Ivy, so what is her entire point, to go back to being a villain instead of supporting Harley? Fine, but what was she doing with Kite Man then? What was the point of everything before? Her plan is to simply kill everyone or take over the world, it just makes her seem one dimensional. I mean don't even get me started on Harley, I'm convinced she's become so popular she's basically become a conduit for whatever the writers want to do to her, because at this point I'm not sure what she is, other than annoying of course. All this setup to clearly have a Harley vs Ivy showdown next season better not disappoint, otherwise we'll all be asking what was the point of it.
Final Score: 45/100
The only saving grace to this show is the fact that it is incredibly short, so putting it on in the background while I was cooking didn't take much of the time. No seriously, like they pretty much shafted the rest of the original main cast, pushing them to the side for this nonsensical Harley and Ivy relationship stuff. Can you tell me what they actually accomplished throughout this entire season about their relationship? Nothing felt satisfying or earned, they just sort of made up over some issues, and now they are very clearly set on some crash course towards each other for next season. I'm afraid to even check out the Valentines Day special now, let's hope it doesn't go on for much longer.
