"Batman Beyond Season 3" Ending Unceremoniously

I don't get it, I really don't. Why were the writers of this show so allergic to serialization? To having any sort of character development or overarching plot beyond season 1? Look, for someone who's supposed to be Terry's girlfriend, and someone who makes Terry question the precarious work-life balance he has, Dana does not appear at all in this season. Max has more screentime than her, and while I do love Max, at the very least incorporate her properly into this show. I mean she helps Terry so much I'm surprised Bruce didn't hire her to chill at his cave, or as an intern at Wayne Powers like Lucius Fox once was.

So many questionable choices for this season, so much potential just thrown away for this show to boil down into another villain of the week show but cyperpunk flavoured. Like seriously, that was the big finale to the show? Terry explaining why he can't reveal his identity to Dana? No wonder they had to include three Batman Beyond into Justice League Unlimited, because they can't even be bothered to complete the show themselves. Look, I understand that it can be difficult to make any real meaningful "canon" decisions when the show you're supposed to be the sequel of is still ongoing, but at the very least let Terry grow as a character.

I mean for the past two seasons you get the idea that Terry's resentment for Bruce is slowly growing, from being in his shadow, to feeling like he never has a life of his own, but literally nothing ever happens because of it. All you get are a couple of comments but nothing major ever really comes up. It would have just been so much cooler to actually have some real progress in this show, but alas you get nothing. I do have to admit though, at least some of the episodes were good. To be honest, my favourite as many might assume was The Call. It was just cool to see a new Justice League, and honestly considering how much time is spent in Gotham fighting random villains.

Look, it's still Batman Beyond, it still looks super cool, I still love the suit, I love the idea of Bruce Wayne being a mentor, but it's clear that there must have been some creative constraints put on the team, because it's clear that for this season, and the last, they were mostly just going through the motions, and you never really got to see them do anything significant, how sad. I mean in light of the recent Batman Beyond pitch, it does feel right to take a look back at the series, and see just how good this show was exactly.

Final Score: 72/100

Honestly, it was a marginal upgrade from season 2 if anything, nothing serious enough that would really blow me away. I mean I didn't really expect the world from this season, but I had hoped that the fact that it was 13 episodes instead of the 24 from last time would have helped. Also on a side note, rewatching Epilogue from Justice League Unlimited it's kind of astonishing how much better the animation is. I really never realized how simple the animation in the show looks like compared to anything else. I think it really makes you wonder how the suit would look like during modern times, because it's so simple, but it works so well, it's so iconic. Anyways bring it back, I really love the aesthetic I think there's still some untapped potential there.
