"Waitress: The Musical" Questionable Ethics, Undeniable Talent
A fantastic and simply delectable time, and well worth the 2 hours and 24 minutes it demands from you. Look, of course I love musicals, so I don't know why I was so skeptical of Waitress: The Musical, maybe it was because of the fact that it's main motif is "sugar, butter and flour", or maybe it's because I only remembered it for being a movie, but I will never doubt it again. I just finished watching this newly released musical with my sister, and while I was "yapping" throughout, as my sister so affectionately put it, it's because I simply loved it so much, though I do have some questions.
First of all, why did Dr. Pomatter stay with his wife? Was it for empowerment reasons? Because honestly Jenna had all the reason to leave her husband, Earl, because I really hated his actor. Almost too much, because his angry scenes felt a bit too realistic for me, and like I genuinely hated him, and felt like he had to be getting that anger from somewhere. Tangent aside, why did Pomatter stay with his wife? It made no sense, there were genuine fluttering's of love somewhere inside them, and even if it started on rocky ground he was the first good thing that had happened to Jenna, well technically since her baby, but she basically hated that poor child the entire musical.
Though, I suppose some of the complex emotions about giving birth to a child with someone you hate has to be lost when you're singing and rhyming your way through a movie, and that's a trade-off I'm very okay with having. And the reason for that is just this musical is fantastic, I'm re-listening to the soundtrack as I write this review, I am a sucker for musicals, and if you are too I suspect you'll fall in love with it. The songs are just catchy, and there's hardly a skippable moment. It's rare to find that level of consistency in a musical's songs, even Heathers, probably one of my favourite musicals, has parts that I snooze to or find a bit subpar, though I have listened to it significantly more than I ever will Waitress, I suspect.
Now, I'm kind of excited to watch the Mean Girls musical, is it time for me to be into super campy and super wack musicals? Now I want to watch every musical in existence. I think this film might have re-awakened my love in musicals, because I really haven't been this ecstatic after watching something in such a long time. I suppose if you don't like musicals this won't be for you, there isn't any real deep subject matter, just pursuing your dreams, and it is mostly singing, but it's a darn good time, and I must admit that even I spoke with a little accent in me after finishing this movie.
Final Score: 80/100
You already know my scores are inconsistent as hell. There are probably albums I've listened to more and enjoyed more than this musical, but damnit these are my ratings, and I love musicals, so let me be inconsistent. I suppose it just depends on my medium, it's difficult to rank so many different items using the same ranking, that has no explanation other than how I feel by the very end of it. Don't be surprised if you see another musical review up on this blog very soon.
