"No Hard Feelings" White Woman Funny?
If you told me that within this comedy about grooming a socially awkward young boy it would have included a riveting performance that absolutely transforms a half-decent song into a dynamic performance, I would have thought you were lying. I'm serious though, go watch the rendition of Maneater by Daryl Hall and John Oates in No Hard Feelings. When I was watching this film with my sister I was genuinely flabbergasted at how beautifully sung this song was by Andrew Barth Feldman. I wouldn't mind seeing him in a musical movie in the near future, wouldn't you?
Keeping on the topic of actors, when it comes to No Hard Feelings I honestly think it's carried pretty hard by the performances that keep it going. In terms of plot this movie is fine, but it's pretty much like if you tried to convince a 40 year old white mom to be hip and flirt with a teenager. Yes, it's very creepy and weird, but honestly most of the time you don't really see them as a threat to become a groomer because of how pathetic it is. Like, I would be cringing so much harder in this film, if it wasn't for the fact that I found Jennifer Lawrence attractive, because god some of the scenes with them trying to be romantic are so awkward, which I guess is part of the point.
I kind of don't like the ending though, but to be fair the plot was always pretty thin in this film. The entire premise is that Jennifer Lawrence's character wants to keep the house her mother gave her, but she's finding it hard to afford to pay taxes on her island because rich white people keep on pushing her out. This is a point of contention throughout the entire film, but instead of having her confront this, including her newfound "friend" having parents who are the exact issue she abhors, she just kind of casually moves on from everything?
I'm probably examining the plot of a rom-com too closely, but I just felt like this film kind of stopped making sense at the end. Honestly, I'm just glad they didn't try and make the two characters a couple, because the age difference really was weird. The more I write about this film the less I enjoy it to be honest. If you're looking for a decent rom-com, then definitely add this film to your catalogue, it's good for a one time watch, but the plot begins to unravel pretty quickly as it goes on, and honestly the premise too, because you start to ask yourself what exactly were the stipulations for J-law's character to earn the car, because I can't tell either. Like was she not supposed to back off when he found someone, why did the rich parents giver her a messed up car? How did they stay friends?
Final Score: 60/100
I mean it's alright I guess, though I probably shouldn't be quoting that clip now that I remember it involves EDP445, a known pedophiile, which one could argue is kind of in theme with what this movie is about. I don't really know my opinion on this film isn't too strong, and frankly I don't think anyone should have a strong opinion on this film. It's fine to watch for a movie night, though honestly watching with family might make it even more uncomfortable, so try to watch it with friends.
