"Justice League Unlimited Season 1" The Same Great Content, Now Bite-Sized

I'm going to be honest, after growing attached to the characters in Justice League, I wasn't really ready for Justice League Unlimited. I mean at first I was skeptical of the two episode per story format of the original show, and I was afraid that removing that and cutting each story into half would have a major effect on them, but honestly for the most part I didn't notice too much. It has a bigger cast, with the same amount of stories, and it's half the length, sounds enticing doesn't it?

Honestly, my only gripe with this relatively short show is that you kind of miss seeing the main Justice League cast interact, I mean there's nothing wrong with expanding it, but there was some charm to the writers always switching up who would show in any particular episode, exploring in detail the relationships and dynamics that could exist between all the characters. It just doesn't exist in this show, and seeing the OG's interact in this show seem more like precious tidbits rather than expected moments. It reminds me of later season of Young Justice, where I just wish they focused more on the original cast, rather than expanding the roster.

I mean don't get me wrong, I'm fine with the new characters, but the issue is there's so many of them, and it's so difficult to go into any depth with them, or their personalities. It's not to say the shorter episodes are bad, I loved many of them, particularly For the Man Who Has Everything, and The Greatest Story Never Told, but you can't tell it would have been nice to explore some more origin stories or have more just regular heroes interacting with each other. I mean yes some of the episodes did feel padded at times to fit the two-episode length, but it also provided them an oppourtunity to explore the world and characters with a bit more nuance than it can provide here. Two characters I particularly missed were the Flash and Martian Manhunter, because we all know they'll never stop showing Batman.

Ultimately, I think it's cool that they cut the length in half, though I wish that meant they had 24ish different stories, rather than 13 short stories. While you won't have time to really grow attached to any characters, as a sequel to Justice League, in which fans are invested in the characters already, it's a great sequel that expands the roster to more than just guest appearances. It can feel a little cramped and crowded at times though, a lot of characters who are just there but kind of unnamed, though I suppose you know which characters they'll be focusing on regardless.

Final Score: 74/100

This is completely random but what's up with the Justice League series having finales that really don't feel that impactful, and just feel like an extra long special. Like in season 1 Vandal Savage replacing Hitler is funny, but the only special thing about it was seeing a different version of Batman. I suppose the end of season 2 of Justice League does that, and I'm pretty content with that, but other than The Once and Future Thing, Part Two: Time, Warped, I felt like the finale was pretty tame, especially considering it only featured three of the original roster, instead of the rest of them.
