"Rick and Morty Season 7" What's Next?

They were introducing new voice actors for the main characters, so season 7 of Rick and Morty was always going to be an adjustment, but honestly it's less grating than I thought it'd be. I mean don't get me wrong, you can still very clearly hear it in the voices of both Rick and Morty, I don't know why but they feel less clear than Justin Roiland's voices, I'm not sure why. Morty's definitely sounds more crackly, like a prepubescent teen, so in that regard it does sound more realistic, and Rick's is pretty good, but honestly you hardly notice it most of the time.

In terms of episodes, this season is worth it alone in my opinion just for how it builds off of Rick's backstory. I mean for longtime viewers of the show everyone has wanted to know more about Diane, and this season has fulfilled on that front. I'll be the first to admit that Unmortricken, and Fear No Mort are some of my favourite Rick and Morty episodes, and it's no coincidence that they are the serialized episodes that expand on the idea that Rick had an entire life before Morty. I'm interested to see if they'll be able to develop Morty like they do Rick though, because he's slowly been becoming a person who's more okay to show his love for his family, while Morty has just been kind of jaded for the last couple of episodes.

I mean sometimes when you write characters you kind of have to keep them static, otherwise how else are you going to keep a show like Rick and Morty running if all the characters change dramatically, it'd be much more difficult to convince fans to watch it. One other change I noticed was that it felt as if it centered itself much more on Rick and Morty and less on the Smith family, as it was in past seasons. I kind of understand why, considering that there was a lot of Jerry and Space Beth, but honestly it was fun to see the Smith family, so I hope we get to see some reoccurring characters. Bird Person Daughter next season?

Otherwise, this season is pretty much what you'd expect from Rick and Morty, though it seems the writers are acutely aware that they want to toss it up before the formula becomes too stale. No B-plot, less Smith family, tying up loose knots with Rick Prime, I'm interested in seeing what they do for next season. I mean this season was pretty hit or miss with the episodes, which comes with the territory for Rick and Morty, but surely the writers feel some need to one-up themselves after the Rick Prime storyline, especially after seeing the fan reception to it.

Final Score: 82/100

The 82 is mostly just because I love the episodes exploring Rick's backstory, otherwise it was a pretty run of the mill Rick and Morty episodes. I do admit that I can see why b-stories are so important for this show, while some episodes have pretty weak b-stories I don't care for, if the a-story is miss, the entire episode pretty much becomes a big dud because no one will be enjoying themselves.
