"Gen V (Season 1)?" Alright I'm Convinced
Look, I'm naturally a skeptic, I just don't believe in spinoffs. So often does it dilute the main product, does it feel not pastiche, more like a mockery of it's original content. Gen V is none of that though. If you're skeptical of this show, I do not blame you, it reeks of Amazon looking at this popular show that's mocking it, and decides to make as much money off of it as possible. And yes, while technically Gen V is pretty much what I just said, it's so good you just kind of forget it.
Though, before I do any of that, I have to ask myself, is a second season of this show really that necessary? Don't get me wrong, I loved this show, I loved the character, and I wouldn't say no to seeing them again, but at the same time a whole other second season? The entire plot felt more like a limited one-time series rather than a spin-off with multiple seasons. I mean considering how things ended is the second season going to focus on new characters? Is it still going to be set in God U, or is it going to be focusing on Marie, Andre, Emma and Jordan trying to escape?
At the very least, I have to appreciate that they tried to add some sort of tie-in to the main show, not enough that it's necessary to understand the show, but enough that watching it prior to the new season of The Boys adds something. Though, I feel like the ending was slightly rushed. It was cool to see a Homelander cameo, but he just felt off? Like why did he shoot Marie, Cate was literally the one who fucked it up for everyone, and had supes attack supes. Also Sam literally died and is mentally insane I'm not sure how they expect to incorporate him into the Seven, though maybe he's the new Black Noir, which could make sense because Noir doesn't have much of a personality anyways.
Honestly, as I'm writing this I'm just waiting to see if Shohei Ohtani is signing with the Toronto Blue Jays. Back to Gen V though, it was fun to see them explore sort of the farm system that they have with children/superheroes, but honestly I thought it'd be a bit more fun if they actually focused on it more. Don't get me wrong, I think the child exploitation angle was cool and all, and I liked the characters. At the same time though, I would have loved to learn more about this "Superhero" draft, and how the school sort of functioned/ran.
Final Score: 78/100
My favourite TV show this year? Well I think it's better than Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, I would say probably better than season 7 of Rick and Morty, better than Only Murders in the Building, but ultimately I think my favourite show has to be The Bear. Look, Amazon continually impresses me with their ability to produce quality milk from the udder that is The Boys, and if all of the spinoffs they announce will be as good as Gen V was, then I'll continue to accept it, until it becomes Disney+ quality of course.
