"Blur - 13" Maybe I Just Hate Instrumentals.

I know absolutely nothing about or by Blur other than Song 2 which should tell you about my age and my knowledge of them. Moreover, I'm young enough to know Damon Albarn for Gorillaz first and foremost and Blur second. I've been told they had a rivalry with Oasis but honestly I know nothing about Britpop. All of this to say is that when my friend Omaid recommended this albums I was almost certain he chose it because a) he enjoyed it (hopefully) and b) he wanted the approval of my other friend CJ. Being a hipster truly is a tough life, and so without further ado, my track-by-track review of 13 by Blur.

13 - Blur

Tender - 75/100 Making your intro track a 7 minute long song is certainly a decision and while I won't say I have a long song bias considering I am a big fan of Car Seat Headrest, I don't really think making your intro track 7 minutes long is a recipe for success. Doesn't feel as long as it actually is, I kind of dig the folksy vibe my only issue with it is that like I guarantee you it could be 3 minutes shorter and I would not notice at all it repeats itself a pretty decent amount.

Bugman - 77/100 I don't know why I came into this review pretending like there was a good chance I wouldn't like this album I'm a fan of rock music I'm not hard to please. Lyrics are pretty nonsensical but the song is fuzzy and keeps up the energy throughout I'm quite a fan of it. Really could be like 3 minutes long though what's up with this weird outro why is this album an hour long. Is there a single version of this song I imagine it ends quite nicely after about the 3 minute mark.

Coffee & TV - 70/100 I mean it's alright. I don't think it's that good, it's just one of those songs that comes and goes and before you know it you ask yourself how the six minutes have gone by. Like if I'm showing my friends a song from this album they'd just kind of stare at me funny trying to figure out what I see in it.

Swamp Song - 65/10 Wakah Wakah" in the British accent sounds hilarious it sounds like something I'd hear out of some kids show that looks like a bad drug trip. I wouldn't say I'm disappointed in this album so far, I'm mostly just waiting for a song to come out there and wow me.

1992 - 60/100 I do have to say for an album that is an hour long and whose songs are all basically around 5 minutes it does not feel as long as you think it might be. Even still I couldn't remember much from this song, it's mostly instrumental.

B.L.U.R.E.M.I - 70/100 So close to greatness until that talkbox ass chorus man. I think I just like fast paced songs or something this song would be so much better if it wasn't for the chorus.

Battle - 45/100 Another 7 minute track? Jesus I can't remember anything. I thought there'd be more straightforward rock songs in this album, like Song 2, but it's honestly a lot slower than I remembered.

Mellow Song - 50/100 Living up to it's name for sure, and an apt name for most of this album at that.

Trailerpark - 30/100 Damon Albarn was certainly freestyling for the verses, I'll give him that. This song sounds certainly unfinished it reminds me of a certain Dominic Fike but not in a good way. At least Fike was allergic to making long songs and understood he didn't have enough ideas.

Caramel - 40/100 Another 7 minute song with barely any I can tell why they call themselves Blur because I can hardly remember a single song other than the first couple of tracks. Well as I always say the longer and less impressed I am with an album the less patient I am with it hence the lower the scores go.

Trimm Trabb - 55/100 Hey we're actually getting somewhere, not that I think this song is actually that good, but I can say with confidence I like it better than all of the other ones. Shoutout guitars gotta be one of my favourite genders.

No Distance Left to Run - 70/100 Maybe I just want some more slightly traditional songs that aren't as instrumental heavy and have more lyrics, cause so far this song is my favourite of the second half.

Optigan I - 50/100 At least thing song doesn't tease me and I know it's an instrumental throughout, I don't know if I got Christmas vibes because I'm thinking about it or because it actually has Christmas vibes.

Final Score: 59/100

We are not making it out of the hood with this one!!!! I had higher expectations for this album man. Not even in a I saw how high the ratings this album were and expected to be blown away. I understand that as a music listener my bias is replayability and I'll excuse a lot of things for the sake of catchiness, but I left this album asking myself why I listened to it all. The second half is pretty abysmal outside of No Distance Left to Run and honestly there is no reason for this album to be 1 hour. I know it's a relatively slow one but I do feel like you could cut out a lot of the instrumentals in this song and you wouldn't lose much.
