"The Witcher Season 3" Why Are We Still Doing This?
I write this review leaving just as confused as I did when I first began to watch this show. Keep in mind, I thought that this show was mildly overhated when it first came out. I mean I thought it was a bit dull, but the fight scenes were really cool, and Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia managed to work out. Looking back, I was too kind on the series. I mean I kid you not when I say this was my go-to show whenever I needed to put a show in the background while I was cooking, cleaning or doing any sort of menial labour in general. It wasn't even my favourite background show either, frankly I was mostly watching it just to say I finished it.
I mean where do I even start? The fact that absolutely nothing happens in this season, or the fact that it is in general just one big mess? Look I understand the complaints about my generation, about how our attention spans have been reduced to the point where we always need stimulation, but this season could have happened in like two, maybe one episode. Even if things were happening, they were so rubbish, like Jaskier's romance with Radovid? Did anyone actually care about that? I mean it's not like there was much emotional gravity given to it anyways, it was by far one of the weakest gay relationships I've seen in a while, and we could definitely have done without it.
Next, can we discuss the giant elephant in the room which is how they're going to replace Cavill with one of the Hemsworth brothers? I mean I'd search up which one but frankly I'm not too ecstatic with anyone replacing Cavill, who has won the hearts of fans casual and hardcore by not only being a great Geralt, but matching the passion that hardcore fans have for this series. At first I thought they were going to have him die and be replaced by a new witcher, or perhaps grab a Geralt from a different sphere? But, instead they just sort of have him romp into a new journey to go grab Ciri from her father.
Speaking of Ciri, she continues to do absolutely nothing. She has powers, but I assume to keep the CGI budget down we hardly see her ever use them, and she's mostly just a plot device with very little character development to make people care about her. I mean for one of the "stars" of the show she just gets shoved to the side for more Geralt and Yennefer. I mean I still don't know why she's just randomly with a new crew, nor why she is going as Falka, all I remember is that she ended up in a desert somehow?
Final Score: 15/100
Mmmmmm, slop. That's pretty much all this show is. I swear Netflix just keeps on renewing it so they can say "wow, we have our own big budget sci-fi show too we swear". Look, it's cool when showrunners want to put their own twist on things, but by god make sure they actually enjoy the source material too, because this is probably some of the worst IP mismanagement I've ever seen from Netflix. From whatever the hell that Vesemir anime was, to that weird awful prequel that I didn't even bother touch. What are we doing here? How do you ruin the success and hype of the amazing Witcher video game series this poorly. All just to give us some more sci-fi slop.
