Sex Education Season 4 "Sticking the Landing"

I'm gonna be honest, I'm actually pretty impressed with this show, especially considering everything that was going against it. I'm going to assume that the reason Maeve's character was hardly present was due to filming constraints with Barbie, which is understandable because the movie is great. Moreover, some integral characters left, and they managed to replace them with, adequate stand in's, though it's a shame we never see what happened with Ola, Jakob or Lily. Despite that, it tries to give closure to everyone's favourite character, never feels too boring or stretched out, and paired with a great soundtrack, manages to be a pretty good crowd pleaser.

To preface this paragraph, I'll admit that I was a Ruby and Otis shipper, and in my opinion they were endgame, and my one true pairing for this show, so you'd understand my disappointment when he came back crawling to Maeve like the slug he was. Ruby deserved better, so I'm glad they let her character finally be free from the shackles of him, and I applaud them for not feeling pressure to give every character some super happy ending. Though, a part of me truly does wish Adam and Eric did stay together, I do really think they were so cute together, and them breaking up was the largest crime this show ever committed.

If you were wondering, I really did mean it when I said that this show never became too boring or stretched out. Let me paint to you a picture of how many of these 1 hour long Netflix shows play out. It has an initial idea, it goes great. In later seasons they try and introduce some new characters, and the old characters grow, leading to them not really interacting with each other anymore, leading to different storylines. Normally, by this point none of the new characters are really sticking, and most of the other storylines are just plain boring so you end up complaining that the show is stretched too thin. Almost miraculously, that didn't happen with this show, and even with characters introduced last season that I thought were boring, like Cal, Viv, and Jackson, their storylines were given time to breathe and well thought out.

That's not to say that I was a fan of what they did with every character. Look, I understand Eric's situation very well myself, and I know there's no easy out, and I understand that there's a complicated relationship between religion and sexuality. But still? He becomes a pastor? They all just kind of accept him? I feel like the journey never ends, as black Jesus put it, but his resolution just felt phony to me. By that same token I also feel bad for Adam, who I feel like they sort of shafted. He goes to a farm, but what about the dogs he loves so much? Why didn't he finish school? I just felt like he was mostly alone doing his own thing, and while his storyline was good, I also wanted to see him interact with other characters more often.

Though, maybe not, because I'm going to be honest with you, the whole Cavendish school thing was genuinely baffling, and kind of weird. Like, there's just some random super gay school in the middle of the countryside in the UK? It makes hardly any sense to me. The same could be said for the new students? I don't know, I don't hate that they're gay or queer or anything, but they all just felt like too nice? Too perfect? I very much related to Ruby when I first saw that school, and I still feel that same way. Like I felt like they gave Beau way too much leeway too. He was really weird, why does he tell his dad everything, and why didn't they like out him for being super creepy and physical. He gave me the jeepers, though I am glad her storyline gave justice to boy best friends, I exist fr fr.

Final Score: 75/100

Probably one of the better Netflix shows out there. I mean some integral cast members left, and they leaned harder into their more flamboyant side, which while made the show feel more unrealistic, made it more fun. There's probably more for me to address, like the whole Maeve thing, or how Isaac grew on me, but you don't need my shallow analysis on everything, what you need to do is watch this damn show right now and give it the flowers it deserves.
