"Pitch Perfect" Better Than You'd Expect
When my sister suggested watching Pitch Perfect I kind of instinctively gagged. I mean can you blame me? Look, I love musicals, and I'm a theater person, but I've always been very against Glee, and Glee adjacent media. I think the reason for it is I absolutely hate covers. It's not that they're that bad, but at the same time there aren't many I can say I really enjoy. With all that out of the way though, Pitch Perfect was actually better than I thought. I almost enjoyed some of the songs, and while I can't say it was really a movie I liked that much, it's better than you think.
First, I must discuss how dated this movie is, and I don't mean that they use old Macbooks or iPhones or anything like that, I mean some of the jokes. Like this is a genuine question, why the hell does Fat Amy have this weird obsession with Jewish people. I mean look, DJ standing for "Deaf Jews" is a weird joke, and I'll excuse it, pretending to just walk away, but why did she keep on bringing it up? It made no sense. Also what in the world is queerballs? Like I can't tell if it's all camp or cringe, but other than that it's not too bad.
I mean it was released in the 2010's, did you really expect them to have young people that looked young? Like literally no one there looked their age. Everyone looked like full grown adults, I don't know why they made Adam Devine the main villain. He literally does nothing, he's just kind of there to have this weird thing with Fat Amy, then he just fucks off randomly at the end of the second act so they could put Benji in more? Speaking of Benji, he is so absolutely useless, why are any of the dudes in this movie? Like Anna Kendrick's character did not need a love interest, it pretty much contributes nothing to the plot, other than making me cringe at the line "we should have aca-children".
Though, I must admit them just inserting "aca" into any phrase like it makes sense was kind of funny. I don't know why it works, but it's just one of those things that's so stupid I love it. Are you being aca-ridiculous? It's so bad it's good. Other than that I have really nothing else to say other than that it should really own the acapella thing. Like I get the point of side plots, and if they're good then they're fun, but they're mostly just subpar and kind of useless in this movie, I had no interest in them all.
Final Score: 55/100
I mean it was fine. I'm going to go watch the rest of them, whether that's a foolish or smart decision is yet to be seen. I mean the covers aren't the worst, it's certainly not as bad as Glee's decision to cover Creep by Radiohead which I still question to this day. Frankly the mashups aren't too shabby either, they go well better than I thought they would. If I had to choose between watching this movie or Sing I'd definitely choose this movie, it just makes you cringe less on average.
