"Mac Miller - GO:OD AM" So, So, So, Bloated

Look, I'm not going to say that I'm Mac Millers biggest fan, nor that I really enjoyed much of his work, even when he was alive, but what I do know is that he seems solid enough, and that he dated Ariana Grande. I mean he wasn't exactly the most interesting rapper to me when he was alive, I didn't really like his voice, and his collabs with Ariana Grande were fine, but he didn't really interest me. I mean does anything really interest me unless it's some strain of rock? No, but people really seemed to enjoy him, but just not me. Even still, my interest in him has indeed piqued after his death, and he seems to have the stamp of approval from both my brother (who's music opinion I kind of care about) and my friend bleed (who's music opinion I absolutely do not care about). So without further ado, my track-by-track review of GO:OD AM by Mac Miller.

GO:OD - AM - Mac Miller

Doors - N/A Pretty solid intro I suppose. I still think his voice sounds a little weird I'd like some more annunciation is that too much to ask for?

Brand Name - 80/100 I'm trying my hardest not to be biased to this song but my brother currently uses it as his alarm clock that he never turns off so while the sample in this song is kind of nice it pisses me off hard. Even still though this song is pretty good even if I do think that his flow is kind of weak man, at least in the first verse but he improves on it as the song goes on so good job.

Rush Hour - 60/100 "Bitches kissin' bitches just like Ellen D (Ellen D)", "I thank the Lord I made it out, no STD (Word)", "Lost a few too many brain cells, I'm special needs". I have no words for this, like legitimately, it's kind of funny to be honest. At first I was like the ad-libs in the first verse are a little corny, but then the second verse hit and well, I'm not quite sure what he was hoping to achieve with this. I don't know why I find it so funny, if Kanye said these lines I'd probably think they go hard but just the way Mac delivers them makes them sound too goofy to me. Otherwise the song is cool I guess.

Two Matches (feat. Ab-Soul) - 55/100 The production is fine but sadly both the chorus and the pre-chorus don't really hit like they need to do to make this song click to me. Like it's fine and all, but for it to really be memorable it needed a much stronger chorus, the song is decent I guess. Never mind, this song originally had a 65 score but after listening to Mac sing on the bridge I am bringing it down that shit was genuinely awful man.

100 Grandkids - 65/100 While I still don't particularly enjoy Mac's voice, especially as he's just saying wow, I must admit that part is fairly catchy even in spite of it. Why is this song so long though, it feels like it kind of drags on. I'd like to once again say that these songs would benefit from a strong chorus to give people a little break in-between breaks.

Time Flies (feat. Lil B) - 45/100 This song once again suffers from weak ass chorus syndrome. Also what the fuck is Lil B saying in the chorus I'm genuinely so confused why is he just saying the most vague random shit about being time? He really ends the song just by saying Lil B? Also random side note but the album on Spotify links to some random ass dude named Lil B, not the actual page for the real based god.

Weekend (feat. Miguel) - 83/100 Woah a chorus that's actually half decent? Mac Miller finally did it after seven songs in. His verses also don't sound terrible too? At the very least I can say he makes progress as the album goes on and that there are now exactly two songs on this album I'd actually listen to again. I mean I never hated the songs before, it's just that I wanted a little more, it needed a good chorus to tie it all together. It's also nice to hear an actual half-decent singer in this Miguel guy too.

Clubhouse - 65/100 Damn we're back to weak chorus syndrome. As long as Mac keeps this up I refuse to give these songs anything over a 70 I mean it's not like there's some great story they're telling either.

In the Bag - 45/100 I don't know, I just don't really enjoy rap music that much. Are we sure this album qualifies as pop-rap? I don't particularly feel as if many albums on this project go hard, or as something I'd re-listen to. A white man saying "So this the music that made white people mad" is certainly a lyric of all time. I mean it's fine, but at the same time the skits just make the songs feel longer and I'm not that into it in the first place. What if they just weren't there?

Break the Law - 55/100 After the first 30 seconds I think I've heard enough of horny Mac Miller. It isn't funny like when JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown do it like in Scaring the Hoes. It's just kind of awkward here. Also Juicy J is here and I literally only know him for his feature in Dark Horse by Katy Perry.  The chorus is slightly stronger on this song though I'll give him that.

Perfect Circle / God Speed - 85/100 Woah he's actually rapping and I'm interested in what he's saying? The chorus is also good too. I can see why this is one of the higher rated songs on the album on AOTY. The piano and reverb effect on the vocals make it kind of haunting. While Perfect Circle is good I think I actually prefer God Speed the instrumental is quite nice, and it matches the higher intensity he brings to his verse in this part of the song. This song is kind of eerie knowing that he did end up overdosing on drugs though, it's kind of sad he was never able to kick his addiction.

When in Rome - 80/100 Wait I kind of enjoy this song. I think he just needed more intensity and energy for me to almost enjoy his voice. Good job Mac Miller. Not sure how I feel about the weird voice during the chorus but overall it's solid and fairly catchy. This is the kind of it factor and oomph I've been talking about that's been missing from like over half the songs on this album.

ROS - 75/100 While I still don't think Mac has a very pleasing voice, this song is actually quite cute and it almost makes me smile. Especially the first verse where he's just kind of softly singing. "Your pussy is a palace and your head is crazy *Woman moans*" If Mac Miller wasn't so horny I'd actually be able to give higher scores to some of these songs man what in the world is this lyric.

Cut the Check (feat. Chief Keef) - 65/100 Unlike most of the songs in the first half I think the chorus in this song is a lot better than the verses, and while I do like a good verse, I'd much rather have mid verse mid chorus than good chorus and weak verses.

Ascension - 76/100 I think I actually enjoy the adlibs on this song, and they make the verses a little bit more interesting. While I once again do not care about the skit at the beginning of this song this album is starting way stronger than I thought it would considering the first half.

Jump - 77/100 While the production makes the song sound a bit dated, I actually do enjoy how the second half of this album going, and I think that he's really solved what's been making this album suffer the most, which is weak choruses.

The Festival (feat. Little Dragon) - 70/100 Little Dragon has a decent enough verse here, and the concept in this song is pretty interesting with him explicitly saying he's trying to go to heaven, especially after all he's talked about trying to kick his habit during this album.

Final Score: 69/100

Look, I want to give this album a higher score, I kind of do, but at the same time, I can't ignore how boring most of the first half was, and just how bloated this album is. I can assure you that this album did not need to be an hour and ten minutes long, because in my eyes the high points would still be just as high if it didn't have those songs I don't care about. Why the fuck is Lil B on this album man? Look, have I gained some respect for Mac after this? Yeah, I liked some songs, some of them were actually pretty good, but would I ever re-listen to this? No way, I still think it's way too bloated why is it 17 tracks so long man?
