"Mechanical Animals - Marilyn Manson" The Album Cover is the Worst Aspect of the Album
I'm going to be honest with you I don't really have any high expectations for a Marilyn Manson album. Literally, my only exposure to him? them? are the rape allegations that are from what I hear probably true since I know Manson as a piece of shit foremost and an artist second. But, generally my friend CJ does tend to have at least a modicum of good music taste, so when he did recommend Manson I did feel at the very least intrigued enough to give them a shot, though the album cover is not exactly what I would call confidence inspiring. Therefore, without further ado, here are my track-by-track reviews of Mechnical Animals by Marilyn Manson.
Mechanical Animals - Marilyn Manson
Great Big White World - 80/100 I'm going to be honest I also thought this song was some weird racist statement and after reading the genius page for this album I'm glad I'm not the only one. Otherwise this song is surprisingly good? I just kind of assumed this album would be terrible I cannot stand this album cover I legitimately feel gross saying I like a Marilyn Manson song.
The Dope Show - 68/100 I actually like the tune of this song my only big grievance with it is the line "we're all stars, now, in the dope show". I just can't imagine it being said in any manner that isn't very cringy. Not exactly my favourite genre because the music is a bit on the sludgy long and slow side but I always feel like such a brain rotted teenager whenever I say I prefer faster short songs around 3 minutes long.
Mechanical Animals - 82/100 Wait the post-chorus on the part where it's just an acoustic guitar playing over Manson's singing is actually quite good I love that nugget of sound. I feel like at times I'm a bit harsh on Mister Manson I've listened and enjoyed much cringier than him so I should not be so adverse to edgy lyrics.
Rock Is Dead - 65/100 I really want to dislike this album because Manson is a bad person and the album cover is so ugly I'd rather not see it on my screen but I'm having a hard time resisting because this album so far is actually incredibly solid. Probably my least favourite song so far but that's not saying much it started off surprisingly strong.
Disassociative - 60/100 A slower song, I find that I tend to have a more difficult time connecting to slow songs so I have to focus more in order to feel a stronger connection with them, and this song is definitely one of those for me. It's a fine song, but I think that it's mostly just a strong chorus and some verses I could care less about.
The Speed Of Pain - 75/100 What did Mr. Manson mean by "our milk has been devoured"? I'm afraid to ask because I have a feeling he'd tell me something odd about milk. Not sure I'm feeling that weird vocal effect either, Daft Punk can do it to Julian Casablanca but I'm not sure if Manson can do it to Billy Corgan. Though if I had to have Billy Corgan on a song I doubt there's any way to make him sound that good anyways. Wait I wasn't really a big fan of this song at first but the outro is actually kind of fire I love the delivery on the lines "Lie to me, cry to me, give to me, I would". Wait after re-listening to this song I'm kind of digging it.
Posthuman - 70/100 While I cannot personally speak to relating to the lyrics of this song at all I do have to admit it goes kind of hard. Also when I saw the lyrics "all that glitters is cold" I thought that it was "all that glitters is gold" from All Star by Smash Mouth and I was about to start laughing at odd connection.
I Want To Disappear - 75/100 Like the last song I enjoy how hard it goes even if the lyrics are something I could imagine from a mid 2000's pop punk band. I just think I'm trying my hardest to dislike Mr Manson but it turns out he indeed knows how to make music.
I Don't Like The Drugs (But The Drugs Like Me) - 45/100 I'm sorry but I'm 90% sure I already won't like this based off of the title alone. Look I'll allow long and weird song titles I lived through Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and Panic! at the Disco song titles but this is just too much it's so hilariously corny. I think the lyrics about conformity are actually good though. I was going to say I'm kind of becoming used to is but the backup singers also singing the chorus at the end killed it for me this song is so unserious.
New Model No.15 - 70/100 Who could have seen that the fast paced song would have been one of my favourites? I know I'm so incredibly predictable sometimes but I do actually kind of enjoy this song. I mean look with Manson I'm assuming you just have to learn to live with his lyrics cause "better in the head and in bed, at the office I can suck it and smile" made me laugh.
User Friendly - 50/100 This song mostly just feels like Manson and Dyanna Lauren chanting everything which is fine but I'm not really feeling this song to be honest I have no real thoughts or feelings about it.
Fundamentally Loathsome -76/100 Hmmm I'm kind of conflicted about this song, like I feel like if it was sung by anyone other than Manson and was sung regularly I'd probably vibe with it more. That is not the case though and now I'm just kind of left here wondering how I feel about it. The guitar solo is kind of good though I'm slowly turning around on this song. After a second listen it's grown on me, but still not sure if it's a song I'd want to re-listen to.
The Last Day On Earth -78/100 I kind of dig the story it's telling. The synths between the chorus and the verse are a bit alieny but I'm not sure whether or not they make a good addition or they're distracting to the song overall. I can say this for sure at the very least the album is ending on a strong note so far good job Mr. Manson.
Coma White - 85/100 The people hyping up the end of this song were indeed right. This song is what I'd call epic in the most unironic fashion possible I love the chorus and just how darn loud it becomes then. This song is actually really good that's kind of crazy to think about, this is something I'd be willing to listen to when I walk to work I feel almost embarrassed to be enjoying it this much.
Final Score: 70/100
Wait this album is actually good? Despite the ugliest album cover I've seen in quite some time, up there with that one Kanye single that had a skinned monkey yes you are that ugly Mister Manson, I do actually think this album was pretty solid. It's only been a first listen though I reckon after my second listen my opinions on this album will remain the same, it ends and begins incredibly strong but once you reach the middle the album can feel quite shaky in terms of quality. I think a lot of it depends on how much you can tolerate edgy lyrics because I'd say my tolerance is moderately high and even still this album made me groan quite a lot.
