"Harley Quinn Season 1" So it Worked?
Am I confused at all of this Harley Quinn hype that has seemingly spawned from the "success" of Suicide Squad? Yes. Was I very, very skeptical of the Harley Quinn show when I first heard it announced? Of course. Do I now want more of it, but mostly just Poison Ivy and not really Harley I still don't like her character? Most definitely. There's no other way to put this but by the time of me writing this review I'm already nearly halfway through the second season of Harley Quinn, mostly because I decided that I'd rather binge this show than write this darn review.
Even still, I must admit, this show is fantastic. I mean I was so skeptical of it, I genuinely do feel like eventually we have to pump the breaks on it, because frankly every time I watch a show about her I always receive mixed messaging on what they want her to be. Don't get me wrong, this show is no different I still think it's a major issue with her character. I thought it was steering towards a Harley-Ivy lesbian relationship only for them to have Harley painfully pine over Joker the entire season.
Not to mention, is she a villain, an anti hero, or a superhero? I'm so very confused at what they want her to be. So she wants to join the Legion of Doom, but then becomes mad next season when she becomes respected as a villain, then starts fighting them. It's just messy, but I suppose I'm thinking too much about a show that I doubt spends much time thinking about it's own logistics. I mean the show hardly spends much time taking itself seriously, just look at Commissioner Gordon, who has been reduced to a sad drunkard who pretty much exists only to mope and be made fun of.
And honestly, it kind of works. I love most of the characters in Harley Quinn, well mostly actually just everyone but Harley, and sometimes hearing the most absurd voices for classic supervillains such as Giancarlo Esposito as Lex Luther made me giggle I have to admit. Kite Man is also great I absolutely adore his relationship with Poison Ivy if there has been anything like couple goals it's them I think I have a crush on Poison Ivy someone needs to hold me back.
Final Score: 77/100
I don't think it'll blow your socks off but I really enjoyed this show especially as I watched it right before I went to sleep or while I was eating. This show made me log back into my Netflix account and watch it because it is worth it. I won't say that it's by far the best piece of animated media DC has produced, especially because I still love Young Justice, but this show is so much better than you think it'll be. It might have some identity issues it should sort out, but it doesn't really matter when it's good fun all around.
