"Dying Light: Definitive Edition" Are They Even Trying?
My review for this game is going to be very unlike the reviews I typically have for video games, and that is for two reasons specifically, I played the story mode with my friends, and I didn't try and complete everything. Why you might ask? Well while the game is fun, it really lacks any substance. Don't get me wrong, it had potential, it's just other than the parkour system, which is incredibly fun and by far the brightest star in this game, everything else either feels rushed, mediocre, or just plain both.
Take for example the story. Now, while there's nothing wrong with a simple story, what is wrong is paying all this money for a short and simple story that isn't even satisfying. From the super basic plot, to the fact that it practically just introduced characters, makes you talk to them once, and now you're best friends, this is by far the biggest reason why I'm giving this game such a hard time. Not to mention, the shoddy voice acting at times just make what should be emotional moments so incredibly goofy because you've only known these characters for about 2 days and you have to act like you really care about them after seeing them twice.
Whether it be Brecken, who you never see again after doing like 5 small quests for him, Jade, who you literally see like 3 whole times, Rahim, who dies after you see him like twice, or Rais, the villain who's just kind of there or has no good motivation. There is no breathing room, and frankly I'm wondering if they tried to give this game breathing room, because the story is so laughably generic and weak my friends and I were making fun of it the entire time while we played it.
The side quests in this game do the story no favours either, as while you think they might help you with introducing characters and worldbuilding, they really don't. Most of them are basic fetch quests and you just end up running around for some nobody characters who really have no character. Keep in mind a combat system which just isn't that fun and it's a recipe for failure. I mean even with some of the nicer weapons in the game both the zombie and human enemies are about as boring as can be, and just end up feeling like bullet sponges. While a stamina system is a good idea, when a leveled up character still cannot kill a single zombie or goon easily during the end game, it makes you wonder what's the point of even trying.
In Dying Light's defense however, it does have one redeeming feature, it's kind of fun to play in multiplayer. While the games goofiness might be a detriment and immersion breaking in single player, in multiplayer you face none of these issues. Part of it is that everyone plays as the main character, so it's already immersion breaking to just have a bunch of dumbasses running around anyways, so it's fun to make fun of. I mean my friend was literally complaining about a boss being hard, so my friend and I hopped onto his save, and we immediately just jumped this boss like we were robbing him and it became hilariously easy.
Final Score: 60/100
Yeah it has its flaws, but the parkour system is legitimately one of the best I've seen in a first player game. It's hilariously generic and the voice acting is wack, but when you're playing multiplayer it's easy to do. It's way too short, but even for the short time it was hear, am I wrong for saying I kind of enjoyed it? Also the final boss fight is very very anticlimactic God this game feels so so rushed it's laughable that this was the "definitive edition".
