"Don't Sleep - Sleepy Hallows" It Doesn't Outstay it's Welcome (kind of)
I literally know nothing about drill music, nor do I particularly enjoy it so I must admit that I will just simply fluff up this preface with literally any interaction I've ever had with it. While I did enjoy Off the Grid from everyone's favourite reformed Nazi Kanye West, I feel like it's just because the song went hard and not specifically because of the drill beat. I mean I don't hate drill music, a lot of my friends, particularly my cousin are in love with drill music, even if I don't really vibe with it too much. Does Ice Spice count as a drill rapper? Not saying that I actually enjoy her music that much it's mostly just for fun. Looks like I ran out of literally anything to say about drill music my friend Shoota made me listen to this album so here's the track-by-track review.
Don't Sleep - Sleepy Hallows
Movie (Intro) - 41/100 The guitar is something? Otherwise this song is pretty soft and unambitious as far as intro songs go. I must commend it for being short though at least it realizes it doesn't do anything, shoutout to the line "fuck the county" I always support calling police pigs.
2 Fake - 35/100 I mean if you played this in a car I wouldn't be mad, I would just ask you to turn it down so that we can talk through it because I really do not care about this song at all. I mean if I was listening along to my friends on Spotify through discord to troll them I'd probably listen to this and not hate it? But to be fair that's probably because I put it down pretty low. What I can say is that these songs do know not to drag on too long.
Breakin Bad (Okay) - 41/100 The reason I'm not giving any of these songs a score even close to 50 is that I'm not really enjoying them. Like it's just there? Cool for trying, but at least with mediocre pop music I can just kind of vibe with them this is certainly not music I'd put on so that I can ignore it all. I like the Breaking Bad references I guess and the guitar returns so it gets a slightly higher score.
I Get Luv - 35/100 Shoutout Blake Griffin I guess. I'd once again like to reiterate that it's kind of a blessing in disguise that all these songs are so short because otherwise I'd be flaming them much harder for being so short.
Bestie - 50/100 Wait I kind of like the hook "I got some real hittas with me and they might shoot" it's kind of nice on this song. It almost makes me enjoy this song, almost. Shoutout the title of the track it's kind of fruity all I can think about is someone saying it in a valley girl accent. That's about all I enjoy though but this is by far my favourite song off the album so far.
Calling - 45/100 Normally I'd say that I hate how short all the songs are and how it's a symptom of this modern era but to be honest it at the very least keeps this album from becoming too boring to the point I complain about the length, have I mentioned that most of the songs on this album are super short yet?
Pray 4OR - 45/100 This Great John dude really out here putting the guitar on like every song on this album it's really out here carrying this entire project. While I was reading the Genius page for this song I encountered a typo it absolutely unsuspended my disbelief. This part of the album is starting to get real close to lukewarm, room temperature water goes crazy.
Dis Summah - 38/100 I can't tell if that line about acne is hard or funny. Either way it seems like this very unspectacular roller coaster is descending, even if it's very slightly.
Tension - 40/100 Shoutout Steph Curry, and the line "Shorty think she dancing on a dick but that's the Hammer", not sure why I just think it's funny man I can't lie. I can almost feel the tension on this song though good job.
Get Low - 35/100 "Lil' bitch, I'm the shit, plumber" made me reconsider my entire life stance on plumbers, shoutout Shaq I guess. I'm struggling to have an opinion on this album
Demons - 35/100 I think the tagline "Great John on the beat, by the way" is really funny because he's pretty much on like 80% of the tracks of this album so do you really need a reminder that he helped make like every song? Shoutout genius for recommending both Cupid (Twin Version) by FIFTY FIFTY and a random Arabic song from the 1920's as songs I might also like when looking at the lyrics for this track. The final line just being his yeah echoing off into the distance is pretty funny.
Switch Up - 40/100 What in the world is this Legend of Zelda ass beat this harp is certainly an interesting juxtaposition with the drill beats that are very much still in this song. Shoutout Great John man he's my GOAT now, truly the most ambitious producer of our generation. The hook's kind of bad not going to lie, him just being like "That's on you, yeah, that's on you if you switch up" does not have a delivery that I'd call inspired.
Agony - 35/100 This song title is a reference to how you feel by the time you reach this point of the album.
187 (Outro) - 35/100 This album ends how it starts, in unmemorable fashion, points taken off for the lack of guitar though, Great John really disappointing me out there.
Final Score: 40/100
Shoutout this album getting exactly a 40. While this album is certainly not the most inventive, it's also not so boring that Sleepy Hallows has to tell listeners "don't sleep" as the title suggests. I'm going to be honest I was very much waiting for this album to be over so I could go back to listening to Carly Rae Jepsen, The Loveliest Time is so good she always cooks. I mean you can see my track-by-track reviews I liked how every song was short and I kind of just started making fun of it fairly quickly. What can I say, this sort of music really isn't for me, but even then, I don't see much of a reason to why anyone would like it particularly much.
