"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" They Really Did It
When entering this movie, be prepared for something, a little more different compared to the original film. Gone are the snappy scenes almost filled to the brim with content, with the plot one would find in a typical superhero movie, and in is the opposite. This movie clocks in at 2 hours 20 minutes, and during that time frame it takes them about 20 minutes to even get to the splash screen for the movie. Across the Spider-Verse takes its time for it's idea to blossom, not like it's fighting for that next sequel like its predecessor was, but like a movie that knows it has time in the next film.
I suppose that's what makes this film wonderful in it's own way compared to the first film. It's a labour of love, but it doesn't feel like it's hindered by the fact that they need to make it a crowd pleaser, the people will learn to please themselves. I mean from the themes of the multiverse, which on a side tangent, feels like every movie is doing these days, to all the conflicting art styles, there is easily a universe where another studio or movie either gives up entirely, fails to make it all mesh together. Let me say this, the art style in this movie is definitely different, and most certainly not consistent, though I do wish we had a bit more of the old art style, at the very least for Miles' dimension, because while I do love the abstract artsy style, I did miss it at times.
Speaking of people I missed from the first film, Father Parker is probably my favourite character. He's just so non chalant and he seems at peace, and I can admire him for that. My only complaint is that he was not more heavily featured, but I can understand why, because unlike most films, this movie does not go in the typical circle, nor the hero's journey, it actually just feels as if someone took the beginning of a long movie, and never decided to finish it. To be honest, ending it on a cliffhanger was a bit of a bold decision, especially considering the fact that they could have provided a bit more closure, with Miles being saved.
Even still, it's quite nitpicky, and frankly my only complaint is that, I kind of agree with Miguel. I mean he quite literally showed everyone the consequences of allowing an anomaly to fester for too long, sure he's an asshole, and what he did with Miles was overboard, but at the same time, he learned his mistake. Surely there will be some bigger even worse villain that they'll have to face in the third movie where they team up right? On a side note, Miguel pretty much did what Kingpin was planning on doing, but at the very least he learned his lesson so that's fine right?
Final Score: 95/100
Go see this movie now, it is once again, peak cinema and I implore you to not let the opportunity to watch one of the best series of our generation go to waste. It's legitimately that good. I'm going to be honest with you, I never understood why Spiderman was so popular, nor all the hype with him, but all I have to say is that if he continues to receive movies as good as these, then he deserves all the praise and attention coming his way because by God, these movies are just an absolute treat both the mind but to the eyes.
