"Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition" I Wish I Had the Normal Version
Look, all I have to say is, that as someone who practically did absolutely everything you could in Sleeping Dogs, it really was not worth it. I mean at first glance, it seems like it'd be a fun game, GTA but in Hong Kong, and with a better story? Sign me up. Or that is what I would say, if the version you get on Steam wasn't the definitive edition.
Like, it's almost laughable how much the DLC ruined it for me, I was planning on writing a review about Sleeping Dogs that was going to be surprisingly positive, but after suffering what seemed to be another bout of DLC that is just reused assets (I'm looking at you Dishonored) I can safely say I ended Sleeping Dogs very much tired of the game, and hoping that I would not have to touch it for a while.
It's a shame really, because while I was playing the game, I was caught in the moment, I wanted revenge for what they had done to Winston, but what it made me realize is that, the story really held this game together, and once that glue showed any sign of weakness, everything began to fall apart. In the DLC were the same sort of quests and collectibles one would find in the regular game, only this time the stories were so paper thin, with assets and fights that felt like rehashes of the first one.
All in all, it created an experience that left a sour taste in my mouth, everything good about this game began to unravel for me, I asked myself, did I become sick of the game because of the DLC? or because I had simply played it for forty hours straight? I mean I only played it to do everything this game had to offer, so I suppose that just means the games a bit more shallow than I'd like to admit.
Final Score: 70/100
I know people love to rave about how this game deserves a sequel, and yeah I would have played it, but when I think of this game, I think about how the story was pretty good, but nothing else. The gameplay was as excellent as you think it would, shooting was much better with a mouse and keyboard, while pretty much everything else felt more natural with a keyboard. The story certainly wasn't inventive, and frankly I thought it suffered from the lack of a third act, which I feel as if most stories do. I suppose in conclusion, while this game was fun, it will probably be nothing more than a footnote in my Steam library in the years to come.
