"Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" Literally Peak
This will not be your typical movie review from me, for one reason, and one reason only, I absolutely adore this movie. Unironically I think this is one of my favourite movies of all time, it's just so fun and if I catch it on the background I have to watch it for a couple of minutes to feel its embrace. I mean look, I understand you can dislike this movie based off this whole Ramona Flowers manic pixie dream girl discourse it's invented, but like the movie is just so fun regardless.
I mean, as a kid, I remember thinking wow this movie is so cool, pop culture and video game references, this is the type of movie I enjoy, I want to be like Scott, not realizing that's not the point. I mean I was watching this movie and I was genuinely kind of disgusted by Scott. Is him dating a high schooler just downplayed? I mean they call him creepy at the beginning but everyone just accepts it, including him. I mean he's also an asshole, which I registered that they said he was an asshole, but I didn't really understand until I became much older.
Needless to say, if you don't relationships or romance, you might not understand the message of this film the first watch around. I mean now I realize, Scott is really selfish, and the movie finally addresses it, how it's so easy for him to hide behind his awkward and nerdy persona to ruin people's lives, and scar them with trauma that honestly, they don't deserve. Knives really was too perfect for Scott, and Wallace is indeed the best gay roommate one could possibly ask for.
If I had to discuss flaws with the movie, I'd honestly just say pacing. I think the movie is short and fun, never outliving its welcome, but I could definitely see people complaining that it's pacing is a bit too fast, never really allowing anything to breathe. Let me explain. Whether it be fast and furious fight montages, or inbetween scenes about the bands rise to fandom/Scott's relationship, this movie loves to jump from plot point to plot point, and I understand if one finds it a bit overwhelming.
Final Score: 90/100
Peak cinema, that is all I have to say. I still adore this movie, and I think it's aged wonderfully with each passing year. Sure some people might groan when they hear or see the character Ramona Flowers, but I think this movie is a great commentary on introspection and the value of self worth, and how it can only take you so far. If you couldn't tell I love the subversion at the very end of this movie, where Scott has to learn that he can't just blindly love without realizing what that might cause.
